Bio
I was born and raised in England and entered Queen Mary College of the University of London in 1955 to study Physics. In 1958, I was admitted to graduate school by the Pennsylvania State University, where I received an MS in Physics in 1961. For a short spell, I then worked as a seismologist for the Shell Oil Company of Canada in North Western British Columbia. Whereas I quite enjoyed serving occasionally as an ice-road trucker, I found that the social life was very limited for a 23-year-old working in the bush more than 50 miles off the Alaska Highway so I returned to Penn State to begin studies for a Doctoral degree in Physics. There I met and married my wife Kate shortly after she arrived in New York with a one-year work visa. My PhD degree was awarded in 1965 and, over the next five years, our three wonderful children were born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I had been offered a position in Defense Electronics by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. In 1975, I was awarded an MBA degree by the University of Pittsburgh, and we became U.S. citizens. In 1990, I was pleased to accept a position at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Maryland. Our five wonderful grandchildren arrived after we had settled in Frederick in 1990. I now attend watercolor-painting classes at FCC and where I have also recently learned the rudiments of web-page building on the WordPress platform. I have posted a couple of my amateurish attempts at non-fiction short-story writing along with some of my amateurish watercolor paintings and a blog (this one). My wife and I have happily celebrated over 50 years together and remain Steeler fans (in spite of everything).
