Bio
My name is Nilmini Fernando. The Ebony Tower is about scaling the walls of academia as a black feminist, the moments of collision with West-centric masculinist knowledge and how these collisions can become spaces of creation and decolonization. Of anti-Imperialism. Over the course of my feminist research and study, I wept, I raged, I wrote. I lost a lot of people and places. This weeping, raging and writing did not appear in my academic writing, but in a shadow journal. I dug deep and wrote what I wanted, how I wanted, and spoke back to the lack of deep engagement with Black, Postcolonial, Indigenous, Islamic and Third World feminist knowledges in neoliberal mainstream feminism. For me, this is a serious loss. Black womanity has created knowledge and philosophy crucial for these times. I draw from the rich geneaology of writing, artwork, music and political activism of women of colour and excerpts of my journal. I write about these encounters in ways that non-academic women and men can understand how racism, sexism, and capitalism work together to the detriment of us all.
