Bio
My life has been characterized by variety. I was born a Southerner, grew up in Memphis, but I have also lived in Pennsylvania, California, Honduras and Seattle. I have worked as a pastor, tire changer, truck loader, street sweeper, teacher, coach, social activist and director of a center that integrated nonviolence and contemplation. My life was profoundly touched and changed from living in Memphis in 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated there.
I have both the trials and profound blessings of being a husband, father, grandfather, divorcee, cancer survivor and one generously befriended by many. I am very blessed to both both engaged in life with and married to Sharon Pavelda.
I will be 75 years old in October of this year. I have been blessed to live a long and interesting life, full of family, good friends and work that I have loved. In 2013, 10 years ago on March 7, I had major surgery for cancer in my tongue. I had to have my tongue removed which meant that I could no longer speak in a way in which I could be understood. Since I was a preacher for much of my life, I almost named this blog "preacherwithnotongue" but did't quite have the nerve.
Now the cancer has progressed and we made the decisions to go on home hospice care. Much of my writing on this blog will be about this part of our lives.
