Bio
Nicole Stodard, Ph.D., is a professional theatre director, designer, researcher, writer, and educator. She is a Full Member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SDCWeb.org).
Artistic Leadership:
Nicole is Founding Artistic Director of Thinking Cap Theatre (TCT), a 501c3 non-profit theatre company dedicated to producing plays that experiment with form and represent the diversity of the world in which we live and to prioritizing gender equity in programming and hiring practices. Founded in 2010, TCT has presented more than 30 full-length, main stage productions, including regional premieres of Collective Rage by Jen Silverman, Dance Nation by Clare Barron, and Church and Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee.
Directing Awards:
Nicole has earned regional awards for her direction of MUD by Maria Irene Fornes, Collective Rage by Jen Silverman, The Rover by Aphra Behn, Cleansed by Sarah Kane, A Map of Virtue by Erin Courtney, Or, by Liz Duffy Adams, and The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde.
Academic Training & Scholarship:
Nicole holds a M.Phil. in Theatre from Trinity College, Dublin, and a PhD in English Literature with a specialization in drama from the University of South Florida (USF). Her research areas include modern and contemporary experimental theatre; feminist and LGBTQ issues in theatre and performance; the history of stage direction; and Aphra Behn, the first professional female playwright. Nicole has published articles and reviews in journals such as Restoration and 18th Century Theatre Research and Shakespeare Bulletin.
Educational Work:
From 2004-2009, Nicole taught literature and writing at University of South Florida and the University of Tampa. Nicole has also worked as a drama teacher, writer, and editor for Treasure Coast Hospice for whom she led youth drama and playwriting workshops on the use of theatre as a tool for valuing life and coping with loss.
