Bio
John was born and raised in the beautiful Central Oregon town of Bend, which lies on the cusp between the high desert to its east and the Cascade wilderness to its west. John was fortunate enough to have been raised up in an adventurous family where backpacking and camping were a main staple throughout his younger years. The multitude of family adventures into the desert and mountain wildernesses gave him his great appreciation of nature which is reflected in much of his art work. Being raised in an artistic family further cultivated his passion for drawing and painting, as his sisters and his mother were artists as well.
John carried his adventurous spirit with him after High School and beyond, with a multitude of ventures ranging from fighting forest fires on a hot shot crew, to working in in canneries and fishing boats in Alaska, and even a rather unique bicycle racing stint at age 20....(which he is currently authoring into a short story). He also has a fascination with Astronomy which started in his teenage youth with the construction of several small and medium sized telescopes that he used to observe the stars and planets. He ground and polished his own lenses and mirrors and scavenged smaller lenses from microscopes and binoculars to use as makeshift eyepieces. John eventually integrated his passion for astronomy with his art and began creating realistic oil renditions of the stars and planets. After creating a number of large-scale oil paintings, John arranged and held several art shows, including an exhibition at Lane Planetarium, and a co-exhibition with famed Space artist John Foster at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). Later, throughout the 1980's and 90's his subject matter moved into wilderness scenery and golf course scenery.
Fast-forward to present day and John's art images depict captivating pastel renderings of flowers and dew drops. "I like everything in nature" John says..."I enjoy revealing the beauty in what might otherwise be a small flowering weed, and turning it into large scale image in the medium of pastel". "Turning the ordinary into something extraordinary" is John's motto.
