Bio
Fran spent 25 years in high tech where her job was to listen to people tell their stories and turn those stories into business requirements -- journalism is much the same.
She brings about change by building relationships, asking questions and an uncanny ability to create and maintain networks of people.
As a journalist, Fran seeks to tell stories of hope and to bring in voices from the margin. She always tries to put the voices of women and youth at the top of the story. The first question interview question she often asks is, “Tell me about your grandmother.”
Fran learned how to imagine how the world might be through her early career at BBN Planet, where the ARPANET and email originated. Her team explored the idea of how the internet could be commercialized and created pioneering ecommerce sites such as MassRMV, Boston.com and the Chicago Tribune.
Fran has a BA in Drama from Kenyon College and a Master’s of Science in Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Theater taught her how to use a variety of media to communicate a message and how to work in a team to accomplish a common vision.
Fran’s father’s people came from Germany in the 1830s from Alsace Lorraine on the border with France and Neuenkirchen on the border with the Netherlands. Her mother’s people came to the Mohawk island of Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue outside Quebec, Canada, from France around 1700. Fran’s family lines came together with Irish immigrants in Cincinnati in the 1890s.
Fran grew up on the ancestral lands of the Osage, Miami, Kaskaskia and Shawnee people. Her father’s land was in Adams County, Ohio, home of the ten-thousand-year-old Great Serpent Mound, created by the now-lost Adena and Hopewell cultures.
