The PYP Freelance Business Development Summit is the brainchild of former makeup hair and styling agent, and Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide author Crystal Wright.
In 2013, after 24 years of representing and teaching freelance beauty, fashion, nail and photography pros how to launch, sustain and develop their businesses Crystal realized that she should provide the essential and fundamental skills these talented artists needed to be successful in their chosen field of excellence.
“I have identified the key components and designed the Summit to provide an industry insiders insight into how to gain beneficial representation, how to build portfolios that clients appreciate and how to ensure artist’s talents are focused on the things that matter to creative decision-makers.”
After years of facilitating one-on-one coaching programs, industry seminars, PYP workshops, and speaking engagements Wright found common themes, skill gaps and misconceptions existed. “I was in the privileged position to provide advice and training that could close these gaps and improve the business skills of freelance artists. I could see the needs," she said. "Artists need help building and then sustaining their businesses. I find many artists lack the skills to reinvent themselves in the constantly changing work environment. They want representation but don’t know how to get the best and most appropriate agents, or they are stuck in agency relationships that aren't going anywhere––the Summit is going to change that.”
Two fundamental skills that Crystal says will be provided and can be learned are negotiation and focus. “For example,” she says, “Social media has emerged as a great tool when you have a plan, but without knowing some basic skills for putting that plan together and then implementing a strategy, artists feel like their being left behind. The Summit is my answer to the call to action for more information, confidence, competence, tools and business skills. The Summit is the natural evolution of the PYP Workshops. Artists can pick and choose classes that will get them to the next level or get them over the hump. It will develop self awareness of their skills, knowledge gaps, and provide the FOCUS needed to become a more productive and sustainable business whilst retaining the joy, excitement and creativity of a true artist and industry professional.”
Wright has handpicked the speakers. “They are all respected and successful in the industry with years of accumulated experience, portfolios and resume’s that are second to none and they are the standard that summit attendees should aspire to on the journey to success,” she says. “These are artists and business professionals who care about the industry, their co-workers and who know how to teach and share information in a way that has never been available before to those that truly want to commit to a career in our industry.” The curriculum is also designed to provide seasoned professionals with an energizing and re-invigorating event that sharpens focus, provides alternatives and an opportunity to learn from like-minded individuals that care.
