Bio
Since 1993 wide experience in raising public awareness at national and local level on different issues like sustainable development, environment, culture, politics and justice. She influenced the public awareness on issues like land rights and the life of the maroons and indigenous people with newspaper articles and television productions. Because of her ability to voice the various opinions within this regard she managed to sensitize the government and the general national and international public on these issues. Her news articles have therefore often been cited in national and international research papers and studies and she has introduced guiding researchers within the tribal community of Suriname. In addition to influence the public opinion and policy in her country. She is working to inform citizens and policy maker on an international level by attending international conferences, writing for international media and producing tv-documentaries for international agencies.
Since 1994 she is specializing in environment and sustainable development issues, raising and improving awareness in Suriname. The quality and reach of her work is reflected in the impact of her reports. For example her reports on small scale gold mining and the impact on local communities and the environment in Suriname deeply affected newspaper readers (micro), groups like people in the interior and political organizations (mesa) and policy making in Suriname society as a whole through the National Assembly (macro). Her reporting encouraged social action and national policy in various ways. Suriname citizens started to think deeper and talk more about this topic and tried to find solutions for the economical, social and environmental problems of the small-scale gold mining. National and international scientists also started researches on the impact of the small-scale gold mining on humans and the environment and cited her reports.
Now she is a journalism lecturer at the Academy of Higher Arts and Cultural Education (AHKCO) and manager of her own production company named Thera’s Publication. It produces tv-documentaries, television programs and company promotion video’s.
