Bio
So, who am I?
I’m a single dude who grew up in Texas and currently live in San Francisco, CA near the beautiful beach. To pay my bills I work as a retail supervisor and I live in a very tiny inexpensive room. This allows me to do fun things like pay off student loans, get tattoos, and travel a bit.
I’m the type who’s always “soul searching”…trying to find new jobs or new callings in life. I had begun a graduate program before realizing it wasn’t right for me and now I’m testing the waters of writing and blogging. So far it’s something I enjoy and the more I do it, the more I feel there is to explore and write/talk about so I’m just going with it.
Since I haven’t found a super high paying job or what most people refer to as a career, I’m trying to put my focus on other areas of my life for a while. Hobbies and activities I enjoy, etc. I think that’s a more organic way of developing yourself anyway. Recently, I read an article about how you shouldn’t try to find your one “calling,” similar to how you shouldn’t search for your romantic “one.” You can do tons of experimenting and self-exploration in your current job and your current living situation and with your current income, with a little imagination. That was the gist of the article. Basically, follow any and all curiosities and whims and hobbies you fancy. By doing that, you might discover several “callings” instead of sinking into despair because you don’t know what yours is or why you didn’t know what it was at age 18 like many people.
One of the things I love in life is gardening…but I never do it. It could be my living situation (there’s a woman who lives next to the garden downstairs and it’s pretty unkempt). But I also have come to appreciate minimal gardening…maybe some succulents combined with some bright neon flowers and a few pieces of funky yard art, that kind of thing- the kind of garden that allows you to leave it alone ad live your life. I’m also passionate about tea…not coffee. It also helps with the writing!
I enjoy lifting weights and working out at the gym. And I have the addiction to tattoos that people warn you about. I enjoy cooking as well, but I also don’t do tons of that. I like to cook lots of Asian, Hawaiian, and Filipino type foods and try to prep my meals for the week since it’s somewhat healthy, convenient, and CHEAP. I love being by the ocean and I tend to spend a lot of time around the Richmond and Sunset districts of SF as well as Daly City and Pacifica. I’m a night owl at heart and love the quiet and TONS of alone/me time. I have an obsession/ love affair with Hawaii, but “I don’t think I could live there.” I love the local food (poi, li hing treats, poke, chicken luau), the clear blue warm water that you can actually swim in, and I love the music (J Boog, Common Kings, Kolohe Kai, etc). I don’t necessarily love the muggy, humid weather and the island fever though. I’ll leave it at that.
I’d say one of my biggest fears are sharks. That’s not that big of a fear, considering I’d never put myself far out enough in the water to even have to deal with that, but it still freaks me the f*** out. This is due in part to having grown up in the 80’s and watching Jaws.
I’ve left SF twice and came back like a boomerang, as my friend put it. But of course I still fantasize and plan about where I’ll end up. In one of my recent posts I talked about my thoughts on LA.
