Bio
Shayla is 3 years old. Her birthday is Dec 21st, right before Christmas. On Sept 1st I took Shayla to our local ER, because she had been throwing without any other symptoms. When they took her back they did a xray on her chest and said that she had pneumonia and gave her IV antibiotic and fluids and sent her home. She slept til about 8pm that evening and awoke and was awake all night throwing up and screaming-I thought this was all because she had "pneumonia". Following day Sept 2nd she was still throwing up alot and I wasn't happy and took her back to our local ER and they check her lungs and said that she did not have pneumonia and her lungs sounded great. Then why did you tell us yesterday that she had pneumonia? is the question I asked myself. They addmitted her to the pediatric floor around 10pm that evening. Around 11pm Shayla walked herself to the restroom, used the potty, and then walked herself (she didn't want help) and went back to bed. Soon after this she started screaming in pain and screaming for hours on end. Nurses gave her tylenol and motrin on and off during this time for pain. Shayla then screamed "Mommy don't leave me, Mommy don't leave me." I told her "Mommy isn't going anywhere baby." She was having horrible seizures by this point, and the hospital called Shands in Gainesville to come and get her by helicopter, this was at 3am Sept 3rd. When Shayla arrived at Shands, the Critical team was waiting for Shayla to get there and noticed that she was postured out really bad and that meant pressure on her brain. They did a STAT CT Scan and found a mass, it was in fact a tumor. The most aggressive form, medulloblastoma. She has been in Shands ever since and will remain here until her treatment plan comes to an end. She is scheduled to have 3cycles (months) of chemo therapy and 3cycles (months) of high dose chemo with stem cells, and then 6-8 weeks of radiation. In between each 3 months of treatment she will have a MRI and Spinal Tap done, to check progress.
