Bio
This year I turned 45. Which means that my weight has been fluctating wildly now for 30 years. For 15 of these I’ve been working as a Psychologist. Helping people solve their problems while I carried mine around in an ever increasing spare tyre. With some tucked in my chins and more rounding out my thighs. I sometimes wonder how people manage to take me seriously. Why doesn’t one of them say ‘Hey, you’re huge. You clearly don’t have your own stuff sorted. How on earth do you propose to help me with mine?’. But they never do. They talk, listen, work stuff out, try new approaches to old problems and make significant improvements to their lives.
But me? While the fundamentals of my life are pretty good – a loving relationship, a wonderful daughter, an enjoyable career – I can’t seem to get control of my eating and my weight. It has to stop. Carrying around an extra 30 kilos is endangering my health in addition to my credibility. My hips are starting to hurt and I feel tired far too much of the time. I want to feel strong, energetic and confident. I want to wear cool clothes and not to start each day contemplating my wardrobe with a sinking heart. And, most importantly, I want to be alive long enough to raise my daughter.
So this blog is about my attempt to implement all that I know from my profession to solve my own problem. We all know how to lose weight: eat less and move more. The trouble is that so few of us can stick to that credo long enough to make a real or lasting difference. We can’t maintain our motivation in the face of the sacrifices required. We stop. We fail. We feel horrible.
So this year I’m turning to my own profession to find the answers. I’m going to be researching and implementing strategies that will help to maintain my weight loss motivation and create lasting healthy habits. And I’m going to honestly blog about what works and what doesn’t. I'd love to hear from readers about your own experiences so that we can inspire and learn from each other.
