Artist Statement:
My work is inspired by the material culture of concrete structures that form non-places and disused space due to the effect of mass construction and land development in the urban environment. Looking at how we view these spaces and our consciousness of the abundant concrete structures existing in our environment. Facades of concrete walls, structures forming thoroughfares and fragments of cast concrete in abandoned development sites are current subjects featured in recent works.
Choosing etching as a primary medium for its tactile quality of mark making and ability of a deep emboss from multiple cut plates, there is a exploration of varied sculptural compositions interpreting the surface, shape and the tonal range inspired by the depth of shadows cast on location. The identity of concrete is a continuous exploration in the prints, with varied shapes of embossed plates; new forms are discovered in the negative space of the white paper around the prints - a bright formation that reflects sunlight and its relationship to the expression of concrete structures. The full structure and placement of the structures are purposefully unidentifiable to draw attention to the surface detail of mark making and linear drawing. The prints have a sculptural appearance and act like heavy weighted objects floating in a space or place; this is a reflection on quietness and presence of concrete non-places.
