Bio
Simple, transparent, thoughtful, particular, loved. I was born in the part of South Carolina called “The Low Country”: Gullah islands, Palmetto trees and the largest port for the first Africans brought to this country and enslaved. I come from all the best parts of what makes up the south… strong heritage, dinner on Sundays, the smell of honeysuckle in summer, the familiarity of neighbors and homemade iced tea with lemon and mint from the backyard. But I am also a naturalist. A dread. A culture vulture. A seeker. In a former life, I am certain that my life began by being dup up from the earth. A potato or carrot, maybe. I need sunlight and water to grow.
I am the child of soul mates. I am the sister of a brilliant recluse. I am the aunt of a boy on the cusp of man. I am the friend to several beautiful, idiosyncratic women who have chosen to share life and laughter with me. To know me is to be acquainted with a freethinker, a hostage of music, and a student of culture. I am a girl who walks in the world knowing she’s adored by her family. I am fascinated by people. I love discovering music that the masses have never heard. I am a collector of things that evoke feelings of bliss: memories, journals, art, photography, and shoes…
I am a therapist by trade and a writer by nature. In a peculiar way I think that the art of both came to me in an unrefined sort of way. Since 1985 I’ve documented my life through the written word, the spoken word and the still image. These mediums have allows the non-linear part of me to express and expand. Understanding human behavior satisfies me in a way that is distinct and organic- the fact that I can call it a profession is a blessing. My academic training has given me the tools to observe life through a lens that communicates freedom, acceptance, solace and familiarity.
