The 45 - My name is Tony Conrad. I'm a Founder and CEO of Sphere
I am a VC turned entrepreneur. I co-founded Sphere because I thought there was a good chance we could make a blog search engine that worked better than current offerings. We’ve got a nice small team working together. I’m joined by co-founders Steve Nieker, Martin Remy and Toni Schneider along with advisors Matt Mullenweg, Mary Hodder and Scott Kurnit.
We're based in San Francisco although that's a bit misleading - we work in a distributed virtual environment with the team living in SF, Seattle, Denver and New York.
I’ve always enjoyed starting and helping people start companies, have been doing it for 13 years. In addition to Sphere, I'm a board member of Automattic. Working with Matt and Toni is about as good as it gets.

My Life As A VC
Prior to Sphere, I was a General Partner at Venture Strategy Partners where I led consumer tech and marketing software & services investments. At VSP, I served on the Board of Directors of Oddpost (acquired by Yahoo!), Iconoculture, MusicNow (acquired by Circuit City) and Centive. I also played an active role managing VSP’s investments in Post Communications (NASDAQ: NTVS) and Stoneyfield Farms (acquired by Groupe Danone). I currently serve on the board of Automattic.
Previous Life…Jobs…
My roots are in consumer marketing, having worked with early-stage growth and public branded companies. Prior to VSP, I was a Director of Mergers and Acquisitions for Groupe Danone, a leading $30+ billion global consumer packaged goods firm, where I focused on brand extension opportunities through mergers and acquisitions in Southeast Asia. I also held several senior marketing management positions with Groupe Danone, with my last position as head of New Product Development for Gervais-Danone France.
And A Proud Papa To Boot
Met my wife Mary in Paris where we were married in a little village in Southwestern Loire Valley. We started with a boxer puppy aptly named Dodo (formerly known as Napoleon). We made a baby boy (Harry, previously known as Harrison) along the way, had toooo much fun with him and so decided to make another baby boy (Xa, previously known as Xavier). Life was too easy so we added another boxer puppy named Boo (formerly known as Nabuko). The pets needed pets so we got a couple of snakes (known as Snakey, Jr. and Fireball) and a cool Gecko lizard named Spot (formerly known as Spot). We like hanging out talking about our pets.
