Bio
Sue Tucker, born 1969 in Essex England. My family were originally from Tottenham North London and Mum still tells me stories of wartime London with food rations (1 egg a week per person!), running to the underground with their gas masks when the sirens went off and being bombed out of their homes. It’s all she ever knew.
I was always a creative child; my parents could leave me for hours and hours with paper, pencils, pens, glue and scissors (until I cut all my hair off LOL).
My original passion was dressmaking so I went to fashion college to become a fashion designer which was great until I realised I have no fashion sense! So I moved into retail where eventually I became an International Visual Merchandising Consultant. I worked in 18 countries including most in Europe, India, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong and USA. It was wonderful seeing all the different people, cultures and scenery.
All my life I have experimented with arts and crafts including: painting, pottery, free motion embroidery and many more.
Then I started experimenting with mosaics. I went on a one day course with a talented lady in the UK where I learnt the basics and created a fantastic mosaic of my tortoiseshell cat, Angel. After that it was pets all the way for me and I finally feel I have found my niche (only took me 53 years).
I started buy mosaic tiles but wasn’t really happy with the colours and results so I started using china plates and cups. Now I only use crockery, I scour the charity shops but mostly “boot sales” where you can get amazing bargains. I look for interesting patterns especially in browns as most pets are brown shades (these usually end up quite vintage as its not a fashionable colour any more).
After a while I couldn’t seem to get the eyes and noses right so I tried making them out of polymer clay, cooking them then glossing them with varnish to give them that real wet look that pet noses and eyes have. Now I use that method all the time. What really makes me happy is getting the exact look of the pet, its so important especially if the pet has passed away and it’s a personalised tribute to the pet.
Like everyone else I have learnt so much joining Facebook mosaic groups, asking millions of questions and watching Youtube “how to videos”. Thank you to everyone who has helped me.
2023 - I am now starting my personalised mosaic business (Sue Tucker Mosaics) whilst also working as a cook making nutritional bone broth soups for a local company.
I live with my Mum, Angel and Pixie our cats. I love beach holidays especially Ibiza, reading crime books, cooking, eating and listening to soul music (Solar Radio online). I have noticed mosaics are popular in Australia so would love to visit there one day.
