Bio
I’m an American ex-pat from Nashville, Tennessee, living in North London, after sojourns in Tokyo, Paris and Geneva. Though I’ve kept my accent, I identify as a Londoner.
My first novel, The Lost Wisdom of the Magi was Winner of the 2021 Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award for Best Historical. My second novel, The Genizah Codex was a Finalist for the 2022 Claymore Award for Best Historical.
Please look forward to the publication of Dreaming of Jerusalem, which was a Finalist for the 2022 Claymore Award for Best Action Adventure and The Receptacles of St. Annianus.
My passion for the historical fiction genre is driven by a curiosity for ancient history and a desire to portray human beings who want to change the world, with a side interest in aberrant psychology. In real life, I’m a socialist and political activist.
Once a journalist and editor of mobile communications magazines, I was subeditor for several years on Dignity magazine. I now am an Editorial Consultant with Reedsy Marketplace offering Developmental Editing, Copy Editing and Proofreading. You can hire me to be your editor on https://reedsy.com/helme-susie. I have been a judge on the Killer Nashville Silver Falchion and Claymore Awards and the Historical Novel Society’s First Chapters Competition.
I write book reviews for Historical Novels Review, Reedsy Discovery, GetBooksReviewed and BookSirens. Please check out my book reviews on Amazon.co.uk, Goodreads, Reedsy and BookBub.
I am convener and founder member of Bounds Green Book Writers, publishers of the online Lockdown Lit—a collection of ‘creative writing inspired by the coronavirus experience’ (https://boundsgreenbookwriters.com/lockdown-lit-2/) and the ‘Writing advice and comment’ blog on creative writing techniques (https://boundsgreenbookwriters.com/category/writing-advice-and-comment/). In 2025 we formed a publishing concern, Green Bounds Books, and our first publication as such will be an anthology of our short stories entitled All Points Imagination--coming soon.
I am a fiend for Mah Jong, though I rarely win.
My daughter lives regrettably far away (New Jersey), and my son and his wife (Stratford) have an adorable baby girl Kira, born June 1. A grandchild for Susie!
