About the Bean
The Lima Bean is news source for English speakers living or travelling in Peru -- it's easy to get world news online, but hard to find out what's going on right here if it doesn't make CNN.com. In the Bean you'll find a selection of key articles scooped from the national press and translated into English, hopefully going online before you get up in the morning.
Articles are selected based on their relevance to the English-speaking community. They mainly fall into three categories: economy & politics, mainly of interest to people living and working here; travel, including updates on risks, airlines, destinations and road conditions, mainly for the foreigner vacationing in Peru; and life, with a few human interest stories that will hopefully interest everyone. In time, there will also be feature articles such as restaurant reviews and interviews with notable English speaking residents.
For now, the Bean does not do any reporting of its own -- all of our material is shamelessly scooped from Peruvian news sources such as El Comercio and Peru 21, so any inaccuracies or opinions expressed in the source articles will appear here as well. The translation may at times be a little clunky, but we make every effort not to let slip any factual mistakes. Our philosophy is that it's better to have a decent volume of relevant stories ready by breakfast time than to obsess about perfect English at the expense of content or time; yesterday's news is a lot less exciting.
