Bio
Tara Hutch Jewelry Designs was created in 2006, yet-to-be-revealed to me, when I was gravely injured during a routine patrol in Baghdad, Iraq on Valentine's Day. My right leg was severed at mid-thigh, and I suffered a third-degree burn requiring a skin graft due to an Improvised Explosive Device that had been disguised as a crumbling curb. The explosion not only instantly took my leg, but it also changed my life in many other ways that I didn't know about until much later.
On that day in 2006, I was airlifted to a hospital in Baghdad, then to Germany, then Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D. C., then finally to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. It was in San Antonio that I had a routine MRI and my doctors discovered that I had a brain injury caused by loss of blood during my attack. I had lost enough blood during the event to make my heart stop; twice. This had caused parts of my brain to die. I suffered short term memory loss, and even worse to me was a Parkinsons-like movement disorder, because that was visable to everyone, and it made everything difficult. At that time, it was tremors, and they were through my whole body not just in my hands.
I put my doctors through hell. First I was angry. Very angry. I was in denial that I would never walk on 2 whole legs like I used to again. Then after awhile, I became sad, when I realized that my leg would never grow back, and I would have to figure out something else to do with my life besides be a hard charging Soldier, all I had known for the last 8 years.
I had an occupational therapist tell me I needed to take up a hobby that worked on my fine motor skills to help with my movement disorder. So I picked up a pair of pliers, and from that day on, Tara Hutch Jewelry Designs was born. This jewelry career has seen me through so much. It has helped me through depression, the loss of a marriage, betrayal and it has helped me become financially stable. Having the freedom to be creative in my business is more than I could ever ask for, and I am thankful to God for putting it in my path.
