Bio
A social anthropology graduate turned English as a foreign language teacher.
Much like "the innocent anthropologist," I also "drifted more by chance than by design into teaching." A dissatisfaction with office life, itchy feet and a desire to work beyond purely money orientated goals, found me trying to guide foreign tongues around English words.
My first post-CELTA experiences were all in the private language academy sector... in Argentina - one-to-one with adults and via Skype with Russians, to toddlers and children in Vietnam, niños y adolescentes in Spain and super-rich summer school kids in England.
The emphasis on "edutainment" was quite overwhelming, and teaching for internationally recognised exams created quite some stress. The schools provided ample resources - interactive whiteboards, sticky balls, internet and projectors, photocopying facilities, mini whiteboards, flashcards, text books...
Now for something different. A small public school in Caribbean Colombia. I feel as much anthropologist as English teacher in this context, so have created this space to reflect on my experiences.
