Bio
I Was an engineer in industry for nearly 40 years, but when I was thrown on the scrap heap in 1991 after our small company failed, I spent 22 years translating technical documents from Japanese and German into English. It was great - like being paid to pursue a hobby.
For the last 20 years I have visited secondary schools, initially under the Young Enterprise Scheme and the last 10 years as a STEM Ambassador, with the mission to gain awareness by more teachers of the need to advise GCSE students to study A level maths and physics if they aspire to careers as graduate engineers.
It was while visiting schools that I found many pupils did not see the point of maths, so I spent 3 years writing a book "Savour the Fruits of Mathematics...not just HOW mathematics works, but WHY is it important, especially in Enginering?"
Printed copies can be obtained from the author via e-mail: DerekNewport@aol.com, but it is also available as an eBook for iPad, iPhone, or Kindle via Amazon.
Wonderful to find well over 90% of kids well behaved and motivated to learn
I play tennis twice a week, winter and summer, and have enjoyed many walking holidays in the Austrian and Swiss alps - and in Scotland - with my wife Enid.
