Bio
This blog is managed by Maria Gitin (formerly Joyce Brians), a student civil rights worker with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in rural Wilcox County, Alabama and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1965. She maintains this site as a place for Wilcox County Freedom Fighters, their families and allies to record memories as well as to announce upcoming presentations and book talks. Forty years after the eventful Freedom summer of 1965, Maria Gitin returned to Alabama to collect stories and reconstruct memories from dozens of African American activists and their families. She combined first hand stories with notes from her own experience as a teenage voting rights worker. University of Alabama Press published "This Bright Light of Ours" in 2014. This site www.thisbrightlightofours.com is about the book.
