Bio
SOTA or Summits Of The Air is now a world wide amateur radio activity. Originated in the UK was intended to encourage amateurs whom had an interest in small portable QRP (low power) radios to go to certain nominated hills/mountains called summits.
These summits are graded as to their height on a points basis and the amateur whom communicates to others is called an 'activator'.
Those whom communicate with the activator are called 'chasers' and also get points.
Bit like geocaching except with amateur radio sets.
The activator whom accumulates 1,000 points can get their Mountain Goat award which is justly highly prized.
The joy of SOTA is individuals can participate at their own pace. Some are content with a few activations from time to time, for others the pursuit of the Mountain Goat award can become a most compeditive obsession.
For my SOTA activations generally use the ubiquitous Elecraft KX3 which gives all amateur bands and modes. A very flexible radio with its built in tuner.
For difficult overnight full pack bushwalking trips where weight is a consideration carry a homemade KD1JV Tribander on 20/30/40 metres. Only 5 watts output but with good conditions quite capable of international DX contacts.
A ZM2 aerial coupler complements the KD1JV and for both radios use a linked half wave dipole aerial.
These combinations have worked very well on my activations.
