Bio
I am a 73 year old retired psychologist that is feeling my age! I have no family and few friends. It can be a lonely way to live. Hence this blog.
I have chosen to become a full time camper, which makes having and keeping close friends next to impossible.
There are many things about aging that I have experienced or am experiencing that are baffling to me. Questions that I wish other aging folks would share with me. The aging people I have met seem pretty tight lipped about their aging...maybe they are in denial? Well this is something I am hoping others (of all ages) will talk with me about here. But for now as when I was younger...at any rate I will start my about me at around age 50. I was divorced, had adult kids and was footloose and fancy free. One of the things I did is decide to do some adventuring, having always been up for a new adventure since a young age.
To shorten this, I decided I thought I was doing something new, but it turns out there were about 1 million or so nomads out in the world already by 2000! I was fortunate to run into a couple of really good mentors early on. I think I might write about how I unwittingly became a nomad in a separate blog entitled: Journey into a hidden lifestyle. Look for it if you are interested in stories about how people got started into the "mobile " life.
As I was saying around 2000 I started out by living in my car so I could save rent money to buy an Rv. That was some unexpected journey!
I did get the Rv but over the next 3 years or so lived in different kinds of cars and Van's. The van life seemed to be the best option for me via our infamous Bob Wells influence. I had not really committed to the life style, I was still on an adventure. About 2012 I decided I wanted something more secure than moving from place to place every two weeks. I had done a lot of traveling over my life and so traveling around was not motivation for me. In 2012 I bought land in the desert of Arizona and spent 7 years living living off grid. I learned so much and kept so busy. I had my own land with a changing view to die for! I thought I would die there in fact, but aging had some different plans for me. As i became I'll (Lupu,Sjogrens, Arthritis and a couple of other health issues started appearing )I discovered just couldn't do the things I did even 5 years before. This was not unusual, lots of aging people get surprized when aging starts , seemingly , all of a sudden! At any rate, I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of my home and couldn't find workers to come to my remote area. It took me two more years to decide it was time to go. I tried a roommate situation, hated it! Tried apartment living, hated it! What could I do? After thinking about it for a very long time and watching alot of u tube vids and seeing how the nomad lifestyle was growing I realized that I was the happiest I had ever been during the years I had lived in my van, so it was time to go on not just an adventure but a life style journey. A journey of aging in motion.
A friend of mine ( who lived in a very upscale retirement community in Orange County , Ca. ) were having a conversation about getting old, she told me how even though she lived in a very active community, there were more old people there that simply sat in their recliners watching tv or reading books, just waiting to die. In addition she told me she had inside information that the suicide rate was extremely high, in her community,a little know fact. I shook my head and wondered how I would handle getting old being only in my 50's at the time.
At 73 I am now there. I am choosing to live my old age in motion. Not a lot of motion, but some. I have chosen a Class C Rv motor home that is a 1978 classic. I have fallen in love with it! I don't know how long it will last me, and I may yet end up as a van dweller again, but for now this is my choice. I live in the Arizona desert in the winter. I don't move around, but have found one place ( it is free) to stay for the entire winter ( I hope). Then when it warms up enough I will find a place in Northern Arizona for the Summer, hopefully one place that will be free. This is my first year back so I have no real idea about what this summer will be like. Am looking forward to finding out. I am already feeling wanderlust but I don't like cold weather so will stay put for another couple of months!
I look forward to sharing more about my life in motion and to getting to know each and every one of you and hearing your stories and experiences of aging.
