Bio
WriteLab offers immediate, objective, and constructive responses to any writer's prose. Drawing on the latest developments in machine learning and natural language processing, WriteLab utilizes probability and statistics to identify patterns and choices in language. The program blends data-driven analysis with proven pedagogical principles to address specific features of thinking in writing, such as clarity, cohesion, logic, and concision.
Under the pressures of deadlines, students and corporate executives alike often find themselves struggling to write clearly and effectively. Anxiety causes many of us to write to avoid making mistakes. WriteLab addresses these issues by offering instant editorial assistance at any time. Through practice, every user of WriteLab has the opportunity to master the techniques of confident and successful prose. As a result, they can improve their skills and appreciate writing as a tool for effective communication.
As of February 2015, WriteLab has entered beta testing with numerous universities, colleges, and secondary schools across the country.
The Product
Our product is a web application that provides writers with instant and detailed advice on how to improve their writing, be it a student paper, a college or job application, a memo to a colleague, a letter to an editor, or an appeal of a parking violation. After submitting a text, users gain access to specific and encouraging editorial responses grouped into modules that assess clarity, cohesion, logic, concision, emphasis, grammar, and elegance. Users can filter these suggestions by module, allowing them to focus on the aspects of writing they would like to improve the most.
Writers can accept or reject each editorial suggestion. WriteLab learns constantly from user choices, customizing its algorithms to suit their preferences. Users will be able to save their drafts and chart their progress over time — be that a semester, a year, or a career.
