As hard as it is to believe, blogging is over 25 years old. The exact date blogging began can’t really be determined, but it started at least as early as 1994. In 1997, Dave Winer became what many consider to be the father of blogging, with his Scripting News tech-focused, online publication. And yes, Dave’s blog is still online and active! Scrolling back through the 27 years of Dave’s archives, April 1st, 1997 was his first post.
Since then, blogging has grown up quite a bit. While we don’t have specific numbers, most people believe that there are more than 600 million blogs out of about 2 billion websites in the world. Just on WordPress.com alone, about 70 million new blog posts are published every month. Clearly, blogging is not dead!
While blogs may have begun by focusing on either personal or technical topics, as Dave’s did, they now cover every topic imaginable. There are patterns, however, and it’s not difficult to notice that many blogs cover similar topics. There’s a reason for that. Popular topics generate more interest, more traffic, and more revenue. Of course, that also means there is more competition within popular blog topics, but that shouldn’t deter you from jumping into your favorite topic. No matter how many others might be blogging about your topic, none of them are blogging with your thoughts, your ideas, or your voice. So that leads to two important questions.

Personal Blogs
Personal blogs are meant to be all about the blogger. Their life, their thoughts, their quirks. It’s basically a public journal of someone’s life. Because it is so personal, it may not always be appropriate for all ages.

A good example of a very popular personal blog is the one that belongs to a “not-always-appropriate” but usually, a very funny blogger named Jenny Lawson – better known as The Bloggess. From her About page:
I’ve been blogging about my strange little life for over a decade. It’s mainly dark humor mixed with brutally honest periods of mental illness. I’m not sure how it happened but somehow, this became a very popular, award-winning blog.
Corporate / Business Blogs
Businesses, especially small businesses, often want to skip the blog, thinking it’s either not helpful to their business goals, or it’s too hard to keep updated. That’s a mistake, in most cases. A business blog can drive traffic, increase engagement with new or existing customers, reinforce your brand, and convert visitors into customers. A company blog might focus strictly on corporate or product news, on helpful guides and tips related to its industry, or both. Some even focus on fun and quirky topics that might interest their audience.

A good example of a corporate blog that combines company news and helpful tips for its users is LinkedIn. LinkedIn’s blog posts range from showing users the best ways to follow LinkedIn users to helping visitors negotiate larger salaries.
DIY Blogs
DIY blogs range from arts and crafts to major home renovation projects. Readers love learning how to do things themselves! We could list many great examples from a broad range of DIY blogs, but one favorite is Paper and Stitch.

Its beautiful design and well-laid-out steps for completing a project are what make this blog really shine. Need to reupholster a chair, for example? You’ll realize that you have the chops to do it after reading how here.
Technology Blogs
We’ve already mentioned that Dave Winer has been publishing his tech blog for over 27 years. Blogs that report on the latest technological advances, discuss hardware or software, or review tech gizmos are always in high demand. Some popular tech blogs have been in business for decades.

Slashgear is a good example of a blog that covers device reviews, tech news, gaming, and the latest technology trends in cars, science, and health.
Fashion Blogs
Bloggers who keep up with the the fashion world will always find an audience anxious to consume their content.

A good example of a fashion blog is Inthefrow (In the front row). Inthefrow keeps readers in the know about the latest trends in fashion and does so with flare. The blog’s layout, style, and imagery is as fashion-focused as its topic.

Health and Fitness Blogs
The fitness industry is enormous and is often evangelized by popular personalities. This “personal touch” is perfect for blogging. A health or fitness blogger can have quite an impact on people who need guidance to achieve their goals.

A good example of a fitness blog is Keep It Simpelle. Elle (hence, Simpelle) is a fitness professional who provides health and fitness articles that are easy to follow and fun to try.
Food Blogs
Despite the many jokes about food bloggers telling long stories before each recipe begins, the world would be lost without food blogs. They’ve become a necessary part of our daily lives, and everyone from the big-name TV network shows to the neighbor down the street has contributed to this niche.

A good example of a food blog is Pinch of Yum. In 2010, Lindsay was a 4th grade teacher who turned her food blogging hobby into a big business. As with all great blogs, Lindsay focuses on a specific sub-topic. In this case, she shares recipes that are simple and can be created and enjoyed in a normal person’s real life.

Sports Blogs
People are truly fanatics when it comes to the sports teams they love. Fans of a sports superstar or team will consume everything they can find about them. Whether the focus is on local, national, or international sports, there is a huge demand for sports blogs.

A good example of a sports blog is Saturday Down South, a site that covers the US SEC football conference. The blog provides news, analysis, and commentary on the South’s favorite football teams.

Travel Blogs
Blogs about far-away places or close-to-home weekend excursions are popular for both savvy travelers and even armchair travel dreamers. We enjoy virtually visiting places we’ll never go, and we appreciate tips on what to see and do in the place we do plan to visit. While Instagram may steal some of the limelight of virtual travel envy, only a blog can make that picture come to life in a much fuller experience.

A good example of a travel blog that is focused on a specific audience is Be My Travel Muse by Kristen. Kristen tailors her content to solo female travelers, although everyone can gain benefit from what she shares.

Lifestyle Blogs
A lifestyle blog centers around the blogger’s personal experiences, activities, daily life, and perspectives. Although that places it somewhat in the realm of a personal blog, it is often a mix of other types of blogs, including fashion, hobby, travel, DIY, and more. The goal is to help others achieve happiness by sharing tips and tricks they’ve learned along the way.

A good example of a lifestyle blog is the Twentry First Century Gent. Women tend to dominate lifestyle blogs, so this is a great way to stand out in a crowd. Ben, aka “The Gentleman”, gives his male perspective on the finer things in life.
Photography Blogs
Photography blogs are a mix of visual and written excellence. The best photography bloggers provide a showcase of their exquisite photos along with tutorials and tips for others to take their own great shots.

A good example of a photography blog that provides both stunning photos and helpful advice is Mark Denney’s Landscape Photography blog.

Political Blogs
For every political party, you can find many blogs that espouse that party’s stance and policies. People follow these blogs with fervor and passion. This loyalty can mean big audiences and even bigger profits.

A good example of a self-described non-partisan blog is Cook Politcal Report. It’s still fairly rare to find non-partisan political blogs, so that might be a niche to seriously consider if you’re up to it. As more people find that partisan politics is too divisive, these types of blogs may gain prominence over time.
Parenting Blogs
Parenting is a big and vitally important job. We generally don’t go to school to learn how to be a good parent, so when the time comes, we are often overwhelmed and looking for advice. Parenting blogs fill that need beautifully. Some blogs are carefully written by those who actually have credentials such as child therapists, pediatricians, etc. But new parents also flock to blogs written by everyday moms and dads as well. That on-the-ground experience matters too.

A good example of a parenting blog is Playful Notes. The site explains its mission:
“Discover simple ways to fill your family’s life with joy and connection. As a busy mom, I’m always looking for simple ways to make play and connection part of your family’s everyday life. Focusing on easy and fun ideas instead of wasting time and energy on all the picture-perfect activities on Instagram and “fancy” ideas on Pinterest was one of the best decisions I made as a parent!”
Wedding Blogs
Weddings are a stressful – and expensive – event. Brides, grooms, and everyone involved in the planning process are looking for tips and tricks, as well as creative inspiration for the big day. Trends come and go, but traditions are also extremely important, and blogs tend to cover it all.

A good example of a fun wedding blog is the aptly named Offbeat Wed (formerly called Offbeat Bride). While there are plenty of wedding blogs to inspire your traditional wedding plans, Offbeat Wed is aimed at the exploding trend of throwing a wedding that is intensely personalized and increasingly far from traditional.
Pet Lovers Blogs
Just as new parents are looking for advice from parenting blogs, pet parents have the same needs. Pet parents love their fur babies and welcome advice on everything from training to health. Bloggers share tips, tricks, and adorable photos of dogs, cats, bunnies, and more. Yes, even lizards can be adorable.

A good example of a pet blog is The Dogington Post. Their “mission is to be the internet’s trusted authority on dogs through exceptional writing, cutting-edge reporting and “awww”-inspiring photography.”
Music Blogs
Everyone loves rock and roll. Or rap. Or country. Or jazz. Or electronic dance music. Well, you get the idea. Music is the international language, so it’s no surprise that music blogs are hot, hot, hot. Every music style has an audience that wants to consume content about it. Singers, bands, tours, news, and gossip are the topics that resonate.

A good example of a music blog is For the Love of Bands. This blog focuses on indie, upcoming, and emerging bands and artists from around the globe. They help their audience discover new indie music.
Movie Blogs
Everyone’s a critic, or at least they like to think so. Movie blogs, like movie critics, share their thoughts and opinions about movies and the movie industry. Top bloggers may get to view pre-releases of movies which enables them to generate buzz in advance of a film’s debut.

A good example of a movie blog is Little White Lies which is “committed to championing great movies and the talented people who make them.”
Personal Finance Blogs
Managing money, saving for retirement, investing. These are all everyday financial tasks that many of us are ill-prepared to handle. Personal finance blogs offer advice and tips to help each of us learn to tackle these duties like a pro.

A good example of a personal finance blog is Inspired Budget which helps women (and men) learn about budgeting, saving money, investing, and debt reduction.
Product Review Blogs
What do most people do before they buy a product these days? They read reviews. Even though we are aware that many reviews are fake, we still know that reviews are the best tool we have for evaluating products before purchase. Bloggers absolutely love creating product review blogs because they can be very lucrative. Bloggers in this genre rely on affiliate marketing to earn commissions from the referrals they send to sellers of the products they review.

A good example of a product review blog is Digital Trends. This blog reviews all manner of digital devices, including computers, mobile phones, audio/video, and more.
Gaming Blogs
Gamers are passionate about their games. They want news and information on upcoming games, new hardware, and game cheats, and gaming blogs are happy to provide the information they crave. Some blogs focus solely on one game or platform, while others cover a broader spectrum of gaming fun.

A good example of a niche gaming blog is Grown Gaming which is written with grown-up gamers in mind. With a focus on adults who have less time to game than young folks do, some games that might take months to finish are purposely absent from the blog.
Entrepreneur Blogs
What may have started a decade or two ago as “how to make money online”, entrepreneur blogs have grown up, mostly aimed at the online business startup crowd. You’ll still find plenty of blogs that teach others how to make money online, of course, but the trend is shifting upward towards those with significant money to invest in their careers and businesses.

A good example of an entrepreneur blog that straddles both ends of the entrepreneurial spectrum is Yaro Starak’s blog, which is useful for both freelancers and online startup business owners. Yaro has been both, so he has plenty of good advice to share for all.
Hobby Blogs
Quick! How many hobbies are there? That’s a trick question because hobbies are seemingly infinite. This means that whatever you’re into, whatever you love doing for fun, might be your hobby. And if other people enjoy the same hobby, then a community is born. This also means that hobby blogs can focus on almost anything. Regardless of the subject matter, however, a hobby blog usually centers around tips and tutorials for getting the most out of the hobby in question.

A good example of a hobby blog is Hazy and Hoppy, a home brewer enthusiast’s blog. Shawn, the craft beer and homebrewing enthusiast behind the blog, says he hope the blog is “a knowledgebase and an inspiration to both beginner and intermediate homebrewers looking to experiment with new techniques and explore different equipment.”
Artist Blogs
Artists are creators that express themselves through the artistic medium of their choice. Some artists prefer to stay quiet about each piece of art, allowing viewers to interpret the piece for themselves. Other artists find that blogging about their art is another way to share their expressions. Still others prefer to share techniques so that budding artists might grow and learn. Whichever style an artist chooses, a blog is the perfect place extend their creativity with both words and imagery.

A good example of an artist’s blog is Dorit Schwartz Sculptor’s blog. Some posts are inspirational, while some are instructional.

Celebrity Gossip Blogs
This type of blog needs little explanation. Humans have an odd need to poke their noses into the personal lives of celebrities, so celebrity gossip blogs are perennial favorites. These are the 21st century versions of the old paper tabloid. Not everyone has the access needed to start a celebrity gossip blog, however. It helps to live in the same area where celebrities live or play. A blogger from the middle of Kansas might find it difficult to get the inside scoop on the latest nightclub adventures of their favorite celeb, after all. For those bloggers with access, though, this can be a very profitable business.

A good example of a celebrity gossip blog is, of course, Perez Hilton. New relationships, old flames, scandals, feuds, fashion, and every moment of celebrities’ lives are on display here.
Book Blogs
Readers love to read, and they even love to read about reading. Book lovers long to discuss the books they’ve read, share their opinions about authors. Readers sharing about books dates back centuries, so a book blog is a natural incarnation of that history.

A good example of a book blog is What’s Hot. Laura gives her take on the books she’s read. She also shares about her travels and the bookstores you’ll find along the way.
