Plugin upgrade is keeping stuck in maintenance mode

  For every plugin upgrade I perform from WP admin, the page displays ‘Upgrading plugin’ with no other progress information. After a while, nothing happens and I realize that the site is stuck in maintenance mode. I have to delete the .maintenance file and when the site is back, I varify that the plugin has been upgraded.

  This is an annoying behaviour and I don’t understand where does it come from. No error messages in web-server nor in mysql.

  I am running:
  WP v.4.7.3
  php 7.0.15
  mysql 5.7.17
