No access any more to old site and no way to remove it

We have an old site from 2016 that our former management forgot about. It still exists and we want to remove it. We do have the proper UID and PWD for the management environment but after logging in with these credentials it appears to be locked by WordPress.com for ‘security reasons’. We no longer know, or are able to regain access to the original email address that was associated to the site, which is a requirement to have the account unlocked again. This puts us in a deadlock situation. WordPress remains unwilling to unlock the account for us after repeated requests.

In a lenghty and frustrating discussion with the helpdesk we finally were able to convince them that the site was indeed ours and to have them put the site to ‘Private’. But still they refused to unlock the account, which doesn’t make sense at all.

We now want to take the final step and have the site deleted. Upon our request to have this executed by WordPress.com because they make it impossible for us to do it ourselves, we received to our astonishment a reply from the helpdesk where the whole initial discussion about resetting passwords, delivering proof of ownership and so on was started from scratch again. It took us weeks to reach the situation where the site was put to private and apparently we are now again back to square one.

We are getting desperate. There is obviously no way to have such an orphaned site deleted by us or the WordPress.com organisation, given our situation. I wonder how many more of such sites exist at WordPress.com. There must be a lot of them polluting the Internet…

I now take the route via this forum. Maybe a solution will finally arrive.
