Bring more people to your site, not theirs
Make your website the hub of conversation on the social web. Connect and build a community with millions of people on Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and more — without being locked into any one platform.

What’s the open social web?
The open social web is an open network where you can reach any reader on any platform. No more being trapped on closed platforms like Facebook or TikTok. Instead, your words flow freely to every reader, on any platform they choose.
It’s the return of an open internet where creators aren’t tied to any platform to connect with their audience, algorithms and corporations don’t control reach, and one universal address connects you to millions of new readers.
How does it work?
Think email. Just as you can email anyone regardless of whether they use Gmail or Yahoo, the social web lets you connect with anyone across any open social platform with one universal address.
By simply publishing a blog post or newsletter, your posts are sent by a service called ActivityPub to feeds across the entire network, while likes, comments, and shares from every platform flow back to your website. You control the conversation on your site, as opposed to having to visit a corporation’s platform.

Expand your reach
Millions of people have opted out of closed social media platforms and moved to the social web. Grow your potential audience by meeting them where they hang out.
Own your relationship with your audience
Your followers are tied to your domain, not a platform. Reduce dependence and harm from closed platform changes. And if you change where you host your website, your audience can come with you.
Be the place where the conversation happens
Instead of scattered discussions across social media platforms, all of the engagement is centralized on your site, where you can lead the conversation. This allows you to build your brand and your relationship with your followers over time.

Social web FAQ
Everything you need to know.
Is this just another social network?
No — your WordPress.com blog becomes your social profile. You’re not joining a platform; you’re making your existing blog part of a connected network of independent sites.
How do I connect my WordPress site to Mastodon?
You don’t need to! When you activate the ActivityPub feature, your site becomes part of the social web — including Mastodon. That means people on Mastodon (and other compatible platforms like Threads, Flipboard, and more) can follow your site directly, just like they’d follow another Mastodon user. Your posts appear in their feed, and their replies come back as comments on your blog — no extra setup or account linking needed.
What happens to my Twitter/Instagram/etc?
Nothing changes. This is additive. You can still use traditional social media while also reaching social web users. Many creators do both during the transition.
Who can follow me?
Anyone on Mastodon (15M users), Threads (170M users), Flipboard, Ghost, Pixelfed, PeerTube, and hundreds of other platforms. The network grows daily as more platforms join.
What is ActivityPub?
ActivityPub is the open protocol used to make all of this work. It’s also the social web. It’s maintained by Automattic, the makers of WordPress.com.
Can I use this for my WordPress site hosted elsewhere?
Yes, you can install the ActivityPub plugin on your WordPress site no matter where you are hosted.
Can I turn this off later?
Yes, instantly. Toggle the setting off anytime. Your blog stops federating your content, and social web followers simply stop receiving new posts.
How is this different from RSS?
RSS is one-way broadcasting. The social web enables two-way conversations — people can reply, mention you, and engage directly. It’s social, not just syndication.
How do comments and moderation work?
All social web interactions flow through WordPress.com’s existing comment system, so you use the same moderation tools you already know.
