Last reviewed on October 21, 2025

A Creative Commons license allows you to specify to your readers what they can and cannot do with your blog or website content. This guide will show you how to create this type of license for your website.

Create a Creative Commons license

Follow the steps to generate the appropriate license and add it to your site:

  1. Go to the Choose a License page on the Creative Commons website.
  2. Follow the prompts in the tool to create a license appropriate for your needs.
  3. Under the “Mark Your Work” section, choose the Website option.
  4. Copy the code in the HTML section.
  5. Edit the page, post, or template you wish to display your license. Most commonly, it is displayed in a website’s footer.
  6. Click the + block inserter and add a new Custom HTML block.
  7. Paste the HTML code from Creative Commons into the box.
  8. Click the Save button and view the license on your site.
An arrow highlights the copy button on the Creative Commons website.
