IP Addresses

Last reviewed on December 30, 2025

An IP address is your address on the internet and routes traffic between your computer and websites or other internet services. WordPress.com records your IP address when you add a post, leave a comment, or read an article. In this guide, you will learn how to use IP addresses for domain connections and how to block specific IP addresses on your site.

Read our privacy policy for more information on IP address collection.

IP address for domain connection

When connecting a domain registered with another host, the registrar may ask for an IP address instead of (or in addition to) name servers. We recommend adding name servers rather than IP addresses because our IPs can change over time. If your registrar requires A records, see Connect a domain using A records to obtain the IP addresses for your WordPress.com site.

Since the IPs we provide are not static, your domain might stop working at some point in the future. If that happens, contact us to get the current IPs and then update your A records.

If you need to set up custom A records to point your WordPress.com-registered domain to a different host’s IP address, see Point a domain to an external IP address.

Block IP addresses

If someone is posting unwanted comments or spam, you can block their IP address from your site. Please note that we do not block IP addresses at the hosting level, as it may inadvertently prevent other people from using WordPress.com.

You can block an IP address from commenting or submitting form messages by adding it to the Disallowed Comment Keys setting. To block an IP address, follow these steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Settings → Discussion.
  3. Scroll to the Disallowed Comment Keys section.
  4. Add the IP address you want to block, one per line.
  5. Click Save Settings.

When an IP address is added to Disallowed Comment Keys, all comments and Jetpack Form submissions from that IP address are sent directly to Trash.
