What subscribers see when accessing your newsletter

Last reviewed on January 27, 2026

WordPress.com site owners can use Newsletter features to create content that only subscribers (either free or paid) can access. This guide will demonstrate what new subscribers will see when accessing subscriber-only content.

How subscribers access free content

If a site owner has set their post’s access level to “Anyone subscribed,” the content will be visible to subscribers only, including free subscribers. If you are not subscribed to the site, the post will show an option to subscribe to view the content:

Enter your email address and click the “Subscribe” button. If the site owner offers both free and paid subscription options, you can choose which level of access to subscribe to (free or paid):

Confirming a subscription

After entering your email address, you will need to verify it by clicking a link sent to that email address. The confirmation email protects the site against spam subscriptions. (If your email address is already verified with WordPress.com, you will not need to confirm it again—the content will be accessible immediately.)

Once the email address is confirmed, the new subscriber can access the content. They’ll also receive a confirmation email with a link to manage their subscription, plus links to other recent posts on the site.

How subscribers access paid content

If a site owner has set their post’s access level to “Paid subscribers only,” the content will be visible to subscribers who have paid the subscription fee set by the newsletter owner.

If you are not subscribed to the site, the post will show an option to subscribe to view the content. If you are already subscribed as a free subscriber, you’ll have the option to upgrade your subscription to a paid tier:

How returning subscribers log in

New subscribers with a confirmed email address can access subscriber-only content via their WordPress.com account. They will continue to have access as long as they continue to pay the subscription (for paid content) or until the site owner removes their subscription.

If the subscriber attempts to access the content while logged out of their WordPress.com account, they must log in. They can click the “Already a subscriber?” link on the post:

An arrow points to the "Already a subscriber?" link.

Then, they can enter their email address on the login screen to receive a login link to their email address. Clicking this link will log them in and allow them to view the content:
