Request a free migration to WordPress.com

Last reviewed on December 19, 2025

Thinking about migrating your WordPress site to WordPress.com? Our expert team can migrate the site for you while your live site remains unaffected—at no cost and with 50% off your first year on our Business plan.

The migration process typically takes 2–3 business days. Once it’s complete, we’ll guide you through connecting your domain and getting your new site up and running. To get started, enter your site details and pick the “Migrate site” option during the migration setup below. We’ll handle the rest.

What to expect

Here’s an overview of the migration request process. Our team handles the technical work and will communicate with you throughout the process.

Start the migration request

To request a free migration, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the site migration page. If you’re not already logged in, you’ll be prompted to log in or create a WordPress.com account.
  2. Enter your site address in the “Site address” field and click the “Check my site” button. The system will check if your source site is eligible for migration.
  3. On the “Pick your destination” screen, select an existing site or click the “Create a new one” link to create a new site.
    • If you select an existing site, you must confirm that all content on the destination site will be overwritten. Click “Continue” to proceed.
Choose your destination site, with the "Create a new one" link and the "Select this site" button highlighted.
  1. On the “What do you want to do” screen, select the “Migrate site” option.
  2. Click the “Get started” button.
  3. If you don’t already have an eligible plan, select a plan and duration. Complete the checkout to continue.

Provide access to your source site

On the “Tell us about your WordPress site” page, choose how we can access your site:

  • Site address: Provide access through a secure connection or by securely sharing your credentials.
  • Backup file: Share a link to your backup file hosted on a cloud storage service.

Option 1: Site address

Use the Site address option to provide our team secure access to your source site’s WP Admin dashboard.

The radio buttons for the site address or backup file options with site address selected.

Follow these steps to use the Site address option:

  1. Confirm your current WordPress site address and click the Continue button.
  2. Choose one of the following:
    • Authorize access: Click this button, then log in to your source site’s WP Admin and click the “Yes, I approve of this connection” button.
    • Share credentials: Provide the username and password of any WordPress user on your source site with administrator permissions.
  3. Click Continue.

Option 2: Backup file

If you have a backup file, you can upload the file to a cloud storage service and share the link with us.

Follow these steps to share a backup file with our migration team:

  1. Upload your backup file to a cloud storage service like Dropbox or Google Drive.
  2. Set the file’s sharing permissions so anyone with the link can access it.
  3. Paste the link to your backup file and click Continue.

Optionally, expand the Special instructions section to provide additional information that will help us access the backup file. Do not share login credentials; we will reach out via email with a secure method for providing the information if necessary.

The Backup file option selected and the special instructions field expanded.

After you submit your migration request

After you submit your migration request, our team will verify the details and notify you once we get started. Expect the migration to take 2–3 business days. You’ll receive updates along the way.

Once the migration is complete, we’ll email you with a link to review your new site and guide you through connecting your domain name.

If we’re unable to access your site using the information provided, we’ll send a follow-up email requesting additional details.
