When enabling Apple Pay and integrating it into your website, you may need to upload an Apple Pay verification file to the .well-known folder of your website. This guide will walk you through uploading the file using SFTP.
This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Business and Commerce plans. If you have a Business plan, make sure to activate it. For free sites and sites on the Personal and Premium plans, upgrade your plan to access this feature.
You can upload the Apple Pay verification file to the .well-known folder (location: https://yourwebsiteaddress.com/.well-known) using SFTP. Follow these steps to upload the file:
To access SFTP, you will need to create your SFTP credentials. Follow these steps to create your credentials:
- Visit your Sites list.
- Click on the title of the site in the list of your sites.
- Navigate to the Settings tab.

- Click the SFTP/SSH section:

- Under “SFTP/SSH credentials“, click the button labeled “Create credentials” to create and copy your site’s SFTP username and password.
Now that you’ve created your SFTP credentials, you can upload the Apple Pay Verification file through SFTP following these steps:
- Open your preferred SFTP client (in this example, we are using FileZilla.)
- Connect using the credentials you created in Step 1.

- Once connected, by default, the “Remote site” should open the
/htdocsdirectory.

- Right-click on the
/htdocsfolder, and click “Create directory and enter it”. The text may change depending on which SFTP client you are using.

- Name the new directory
.well-knownand click the “Okay” button to create the directory.

- In the Local site section of FileZilla (or your preferred SFTP’s local directory panel), locate the apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association.txt file.
- Right click on the file and select the “Upload” option.

- Your file should be uploaded successfully on the website.
