Add notes to blocks

Last reviewed on January 30, 2026

Add notes to blocks in the WordPress editor to discuss changes, request edits, or keep track of ideas. In this guide, you’ll learn how to add, view, and work with notes while editing your content.

About block notes

You can leave comments directly on specific blocks in the WordPress editor. Users with the Administrator, Editor, or Author role can create and reply to notes. Notes are visible within the editor only and cannot be seen publicly.

Notes are threaded, can be resolved when a discussion is complete, and reopened at any time if further adjustments are needed. When a new note is added to a post or page, the author receives an email notification.

A note is shown next to a block of text, with another user replying to it.

Leave a note on a block

To add a note to a block, take the following steps:

  1. Edit a page or post.
  2. Click on a block, and a toolbar will appear.
  3. Click the ⋮ (three dots) icon.
  4. Select the “Add note” option.
  5. Type your note in the text box.
  6. Click the “Add note” button to submit the note.

Notes have the following options:

  • Click the checkmark icon to resolve the note. Resolved notes can be viewed in all notes (described below).
  • Click the ⋮ icon to Edit or Delete a note.

You can add further replies to your own note if needed.

Collaborate with AI using block notes

If you used our AI website builder to create your website, you can use the WordPress AI Assistant to provide meaningful assistance in the post editor, given the context of the post, blocks, and ongoing conversations in the note thread. To start a conversation with the AI, follow these steps:

  1. Edit a post.
  2. Click on a block, and a toolbar will appear.
  3. Click the ⋮ (three dots) icon.
  4. Select the “Add note” option.
  5. Type your note in the text box starting with @ai.
  6. Click the “Add note” button to submit the note.

The WordPress AI Assistant will think and respond in the same note thread but will not be able to change things in the post automatically. To continue the conversation with the AI assistant, you must always preface your message with @ai.

Try various real-world prompts for things like:

  • Content feedback & review
    @ai – Please fact-check this block
@ai – Suggest improvements for clarity or tone
  • Ideation & writing assistance
@ai – Give me headline ideas for this article
@ai – Suggest examples to strengthen this paragraph
  • Informational queries from other web sources
@ai – What’s the sunrise time in New York today?
@ai – Explain this concept in simple terms

View notes

If a block has notes, you’ll see the profile photo of the person who added the note in the block toolbar. Click the photo to view the note.

A profile photo is shown in the block toolbar next to the ellipses button.

To view all notes on a page or post, click the Notes icon (speech bubble) in the upper corner of the editor, next to the Save button.

An arrow points to the notes icon.
