Have a question?
Ask our AI assistantPattern overrides are useful when you want to reuse the same design, style, and layout but change specific content. When you enable overrides for blocks in a synced pattern, you can edit those blocks after adding the pattern to your page. Your changes only alter that specific use of the pattern.
For example, imagine you create a recipe card pattern with sections for ingredients and cooking steps. You can use this same pattern for multiple recipes while changing only the ingredient list and steps for each one. The overall design stays the same, but the content changes to match each recipe.
To enable overrides for specific blocks in a synced pattern, follow these steps:
- From your site’s dashboard, navigate to Appearance → Editor and click Patterns.
- Edit your synced pattern, or add a new synced pattern.
- Click on a block that supports pattern overrides (including Paragraph, Heading, Image, and Button blocks).
- Open the block settings sidebar and click on the Advanced section at the bottom to reveal the advanced settings.
- Click the “Enable overrides” button.

- Type a name for your override (this name is only visible to you), and click the Enable button.
- Click the Save button in the top-right of the editor to save your changes.
Now, when you add a pattern to a page or a post, you can edit the content in the blocks that have overrides enabled. You can see which blocks in the pattern can be edited by using the List View. Only blocks in the pattern that allow overrides will be listed under the pattern name.

If you modify a specific block in the synced pattern that you want to undo, follow these steps:
- Edit the page or post you’ve added the pattern to.
- Click the block in the pattern with overrides you want to reset.
- Click the Reset option in the block’s toolbar to restore the original content.
