Problems with editing photos

  Hi,
  I’m brand new to use wordpress.com. I want to be able to change the size of my photos.
  I have understood so far that I need to use the function ‘media’ and I can see a a bar where I can edit my photos.
  When using this bar the photo shows up in a new window where you can name the photo, see that it is a jpf.file etc. But I can’t change the dimensions. This field is locked, can’t do anything. Is this because I’m using a free ‘theme’ and not paying, using Twenty Nineteen? Using Chrome as web-program. Greatful for help
