Caretta AI Assistant

Someone lands on your site at eleven at night with one question standing between them and a purchase. Right now they either find the answer themselves or they leave. Caretta answers them.

It learns from what your site already says, so there is nothing to train and no script to write. You connect your account, tick one box, and the assistant appears in the corner of your site.

What it does for you

  • It answers instead of collecting an email. Shipping times, returns, sizes, opening hours, whether you deliver to a city. The questions that used to sit in your inbox until morning get an answer straight away.
  • It replies in the visitor’s language. Someone writes in German, they get German back. English and Turkish too.
  • It knows your products. With WooCommerce, your catalogue goes to the assistant when you connect, so it answers with real names and prices and puts the product in the chat with a link to buy.
  • It tells you where it fell short. Every question it could not answer is waiting for you in the Gaps list, with a counter for how often it was asked. You write the answer once and the assistant uses it from then on.
  • It looks like it belongs to you. Pick your colour, the title, which corner it sits in, and which pages it appears on. Until someone clicks, it is a small button.

What you should know before installing

  • Caretta is a paid service from WAPI. You need an account with credit on it; the plugin is the free way to put that service on your WordPress site. Details and pricing: https://wapiso.com/caretta-assistant
  • Conversations are kept in your WAPI account, where you can read them. Your WordPress database keeps the counts and the unanswered questions, not the chats.
  • Nothing leaves your site until you connect an account. After that, visitors’ messages go to Caretta to be answered, and on a WooCommerce site your products go too. The External services section below spells this out.

The chat goes through your own site

Most chat plugins put a key into your pages and let the visitor’s browser talk to the vendor. This one does not. Messages go to your own site first, and your site passes them on. Your key never appears in the page, so nobody can lift it from there and use it elsewhere.

When it does not know the answer

The assistant answers from your site. Where your site is silent, you speak:

  1. Open Caretta → Gaps. It lists what visitors asked and the assistant could not answer, the most asked first.
  2. Press Write answer and reply in your own words.
  3. Your answer joins the Knowledge Base and goes to the assistant. The next visitor who asks gets it.

Those answers stay in WordPress even if you stop using the service.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.0 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer.
  • A WAPI account. One button on the Caretta screen sets up the connection for you.
  • A permalink setting other than «Plain», under Settings → Permalinks. The plugin checks this itself, and if the setting gets in the way it keeps the assistant hidden and tells you, rather than showing your visitors a button that cannot answer.
  • Nothing else. It changes no setting of yours, and works on sites installed in a subfolder as well.

About the name

Caretta is WAPI’s own product and is published here by its owner: the WordPress.org account, this plugin and the site https://wapiso.com all belong to the same company. «Caretta» is the name of the loggerhead sea turtle, which is where the name and the logo come from. The product page is https://wapiso.com/caretta-assistant.

This plugin is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any other product, service or company using a similar name.

WooCommerce is a trademark of Automattic Inc. This plugin works with WooCommerce but is not affiliated with or endorsed by Automattic.

Languages

The plugin is in English and comes with a Turkish translation, which WordPress uses automatically on a Turkish site. Other languages can be contributed through translate.wordpress.org.

External services

This plugin uses two outside services. Both are described here so you know what leaves your site.

1. Caretta, the assistant service, run by WAPI at wapiso.com

The plugin is the WordPress side of Caretta. Without the service there is nothing to answer with.

What is sent, and when. Your site’s server, not the visitor’s browser, sends:

  • Every time a visitor opens the chat or writes a message: the message itself, a random identifier the plugin makes up for that visitor, the identifier of the conversation, the address of the page the chat was opened on, the language, and your key. As with any request over the internet, your server’s address is visible to the service, and so is the visitor’s.
  • When you use the plugin’s own screens: connecting your account, testing the connection, reading your knowledge base and the unanswered questions, and sending the answers you write.
  • If WooCommerce is active: your published products, once you connect your account, so the assistant can answer about what you sell. Sent are the product name, price, link, stock status and image address. Products you add or change afterwards follow, and deleted ones are removed. This starts with the connection, not with a separate switch, and disconnecting stops it.

Nothing is sent before you connect an account or enter a key.

2. Cloudflare Turnstile, bot protection, currently off

Turnstile is Cloudflare’s way of telling people from bots. The chat carries the ability to use it, so it is documented here even though it does not run today.

When it would run. Only if the assistant service asks for it. It has not done so since June 2026, so no request reaches Cloudflare and nothing of Cloudflare’s is added to your pages. It is written down here because the service could switch it on without the plugin changing.

What would be sent if it were on. The visitor’s browser would load Cloudflare’s checker, and Cloudflare would receive what it needs to score the visit: the visitor’s address, details of their browser and device, and how they behave on the page.

Source code

For developers. Nothing in this plugin is hidden or scrambled: the PHP is shipped as written, and the chat widget’s full source, its build script and its pinned dependencies ship in the widget-src folder inside the plugin. To rebuild the widget from that source, run npm ci in the folder and then CARETTA_EMBED_OUT=../assets/embed npm run build; npm run check runs the tests on their own. Everything else in this readme is for the person using the plugin.
