SSL support ＆ domain provider

hello,
I’m currently trying to decide on whether to obtain a domain name through a well known domain provider or through word press. Can you tell me the advantage (if any) of obtaining a domain through word press as well as using word press as a Web host for a Web page?
Key to this, if I were to obtain a domain externally, such as through godaddy and then set up a website through WordPress, would i be SSL certified via WordPress?
If buying a domain externally, when setting up a Website through WordPress, would i be able to use my .com address purchased through another organisation rather than having the page as a WordPress.com site -
