Bernerslee Site Diagnostics & Recovery

Bernerslee is a troubleshooting and site-diagnostics plugin for WordPress administrators. It captures fatal errors, checks common site-health signals, connects errors with recent plugin/theme/core changes, and presents actionable results.

Local check-ups work without AI and do not send diagnostic data outside the site.

Local check-ups

• Capture and group PHP fatal shutdown errors.
• Attribute error paths to WordPress core, plugins, themes, custom code, or PHP.
• Record plugin activation/deactivation/update events, theme switches, and core updates.
• Check homepage loopback access, REST API status, WP-Cron, overdue events, memory limits, production debug settings, and available updates.
• Measure autoloaded option data, expired transients, and post revisions.
• Save historical check-up reports and export a redacted JSON report.

Actions and troubleshooting

Bernerslee can clear expired transients, refresh permalink rules, and disable the built-in plugin/theme file editors. When a plugin is suspected, Bernerslee links to the native WordPress Plugins screen so the administrator can decide whether to change its activation status.

Bernerslee does not execute AI-generated PHP, SQL, or shell commands and does not modify Nginx, Apache, PHP-FPM, MySQL, DNS, SSL, WordPress core files, or arbitrary plugin/theme code.

Optional AI analysis

AI appears when local checks find related signals but cannot confidently identify one root cause. The administrator chooses a provider, supplies its API key, previews the redacted payload, and explicitly starts the request. AI output is advisory and should be verified before changes are made.

Privacy

Local check-ups remain on the WordPress site. Local change/action records may include the numeric WordPress user ID of the administrator who performed an action.

When AI analysis is explicitly requested, Bernerslee may send WordPress/PHP/database version information, finding titles and summaries, short redacted evidence strings, component type/slug, check-up status, and recent plugin/theme/core change records. A connection test sends only a minimal prompt.

Bernerslee is designed not to send article content, passwords, cookies, database credentials, the saved provider API key, query-string values, or the complete wp-config.php file. The payload can be previewed before AI analysis. API keys are stored in the WordPress options table with autoload disabled.

External services

Bernerslee does not contact an AI provider during local check-ups. The services below are optional. For each selected provider, data is sent only when an administrator explicitly starts AI analysis or tests the connection. AI analysis sends the redacted diagnostic payload described in the Privacy section; connection testing sends only a minimal test prompt.

• Custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint — Used only when an administrator explicitly enters an HTTPS endpoint. The same redacted payload or minimal connection-test prompt is sent to that endpoint. Because the service is chosen by the administrator, the administrator must review that service’s applicable terms and privacy policy before use.
