About the design
Honoring Pattern, Memory, and the Expanding Future
The design draws from the long tradition of ornamentation and geometric patterns found across diverse African artistic traditions. These motifs are used throughout the theme—in the header, footer, and main content sections—serving as visual markers of continuity and memory. Bright, vivid colors celebrate energy and creativity, making the content feel dynamic while keeping the Afrofuturist aesthetic.
The layout emphasizes openness and scale. Query Loops are presented as full-width, spacious grids (two or four columns) built with Post Templates that use cover blocks and masks to create layered, immersive compositions. Sankofa is designed to support narrative projects, journals, cultural magazines, and research publications that benefit from expressive visuals paired with a clear editorial structure.
Typography and color
The default variation is vibrant: a colorful palette combined with Formera for headings and Chakra Petch for body text. The headings bring angular tension and simple shapes reflecting traditional symbols, while the copy text adds to the combination with its tech-inspired geometry: squared counters and precise, mechanical lines that suggest digital interfaces without compromising readability.
Sankofa also features a style variation called Dogon, inspired by more muted, archival tones. Here, vibrant colors give way to a neutral environment that emphasizes texture and form. Headings switch to Jaro, a bold, expressive display font with exaggerated shapes and rhythmic contours that infuse energy even with minimal color schemes. For body text and links, PT Root UI offers a practical, documentation-friendly neutrality—clean, engineered, and highly legible. The combination creates a variation that feels softer in color but richer in typography, providing a different yet cohesive tonal expression of the core ideas.
