When a visitor clicks a summary button, Pointwise Summary builds a prompt from your post and opens it directly in the AI model of your choice — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, or Google AI — ready to generate a short TL;DR, a list of key points, or a detailed overview. You control the style, length, placement, and prompt. No API key or server-side account with this plugin is required — visitors use whatever access they already have to that AI provider’s own site.

What is TL;DR and Why It Matters

TL;DR (“Too Long; Didn’t Read”) is a popular internet acronym that originated in online forums and Usenet newsgroups in the early 2000s. It was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013 and now serves two purposes:

How It Works

  1. Install and activate Pointwise Summary

When a reader clicks the button, they’re taken to a new tab on the selected AI model’s own site with the post’s content already filled in as a ready-to-run prompt — no copying and pasting, no API key, and no account with this plugin required.

External services

This plugin connects to third-party AI and social sharing services that are external to your website. These connections are optional and are only triggered by an explicit action from your site’s visitor (clicking an AI summary button or a social share button) — nothing is sent automatically or in the background.

AI summary buttons

When a visitor clicks an AI summary button, the plugin builds a prompt from the current post’s title, content, and URL, then opens a new browser tab directly to the selected AI provider’s own website with that prompt pre-filled via the page URL. From that point, the visitor’s browser communicates directly with the AI provider. This plugin does not operate its own server-side API, does not require an API key, and does not store or receive the AI’s response.

Social sharing buttons

When a visitor clicks a social share button, the plugin opens that network’s own share dialog in a new tab (or the visitor’s email client for the Email option), passing only the current post’s title and URL. No other content is sent, and nothing reaches the network unless the visitor completes the share on that network’s own site.

Source Code

The JavaScript shipped in /build (admin dashboard, frontend script, and Gutenberg block) is compiled from human-readable source. The full uncompiled source is publicly available at:

Build tooling: this plugin uses @wordpress/scripts (webpack + Babel) via npm.

  • npm install — install dependencies

Bundled third-party libraries

This plugin bundles the JavaScript libraries it depends on directly inside /build, rather than loading any of them from a remote CDN at runtime. Every script the plugin loads is served from your own site.

  • Monaco Editor (https://github.com/microsoft/monaco-editor, MIT License) — powers the Custom CSS code field under Advanced Settings. Its runtime files (editor core, syntax highlighting, workers) are copied into this plugin at build time and served locally; no request is made to any CDN (such as cdn.jsdelivr.net) to load them.
  • React, Redux, and related UI libraries used to build the admin dashboard are likewise compiled into /build/admin/admin.js and served from this plugin — none are fetched remotely.

Usage

Basic Setup

  1. Go to AI Summary (TL;DR) → AI Settings to choose your AI models and customize their prompts
  2. Go to AI Summary (TL;DR) → Display Settings to customize button appearance and placement
  3. Save changes and view your posts to see the summary buttons in action
