Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.

not bad, but not good
Hate hate hate the new Dashboard setup.
Hey I am a new user and I love what have seen so far. Thanks
Hate it! I have had nothing but headaches–my uploads of graphics are much much slower and often error and time out. Even after updating my Flash program. What happend to searching for drafts if we cannot finish a post we are working on–I still cannot find how to look for unfinished drafts–the “crunching” of photos is awful and makes things look like doo-doo. I used to be able to choose full image and have it be a full image now it takes images 500pxl wide and re-sizes to 388. Unless I upload new media–save post–view post-click image–get page link–go back to edit screen–delete image that inserted on uplad–and do an image link. My gosh! That is too much work. I hope some of these things get addressed real soon. Recently I gave up my domaina nd had it point to my wrodpress blog–but now I am rethinking my decisions.
will you please also put a “insert to post/editor” button in the media gallery. i found it in the library. that would help tremendously.
also, why in the world is there a file limit now for video uploads to 100 MB if i’m a paying member? i can get that for FREE on you tube and hence have no need nor desire to pay anymore. it was so good to upload non-compressed videos. 😦
why do i have problems now about posting pictures? i upload them and then when i click
“insert into post” apears just a blank page and a an alert message saying:”done” or “done but with errors”, and that blank pop up stays forever…
Is it possible that this new upgrade is what knocked out one of my donation links on my services page?
And, on the same page when I try to edit it, it won’t go into HTML when I click on it. So I haven’t been able to convert my “buy now” link into a live link to paypal again. Very frustrating.
Oh, OKAY I’ll use the feedback form…
Preferred the old one by far. Takes me *much* longer to write a post now (also the word count has disappeared). Seems like a case of change for the sake of it. If the old one wasn’t broken, why fix it?
Sorry but the upload pictures doesn’t work for me.
I can’t add photos to my blog anymore.
Can anybody help?
Answer us WordPress!!!!
Answer all of us who HATE the new image loading and inserting!!!!
I haev to rely on raw HTML to put in images fer crying out loud!
I hate the new dashboard.
It needs some distinction between the various levels of navigation.
I like it Thanks allot
i left using the ‘blogger’ n started wordpress because of its fast picture uploads & ‘edit’ comments.
Sadly both features have been lost after the sexy looks it got!
i’m annoyed!
I is very cool and more practical than old dashboard. I like it.
i d’nt like this because i can’t post images
How do I edit a the timepost for a post now? And how do I edit the content of a comment?
I could not be more unhabppy with WordPress and it’s “enhancements” than I am right now. You’re really stifling my ability to blog here. Please give us back the old dashboard, or fix all the hideous bugs right now!
With this new design i just can’t put a picture into my post, because the picture stays at the gallery and don’t go to the post. Besides that i can’t post a video from youtube.com as I always did, now have to post a video from my computer.
I really didn’t like the changes and if the things continue like this i’ll have do delete my blog, ’cause I have to be able to post pictures and videos.
I like the design of the new dashboard overall. Does anyone else find though that the new logo, especially the favicon, looks a little too similar to the Volkswagen logo? It’s mainly the colour that does it, I think, because this similarity never struck me when the logo was grey.
uhh. where did the WORD COUNT go? It vanished. 😦
Can someone please tell me how to upload a pdf file to post on my wordpress blog? The old style had the upload file on the bottom, and it was easy to see, now, I cannot see it anywhere. Please, I need some help!
Willie
I love it!!
I can’t seem to make anything work other than a basic written post. I can’t add pics (which I could do before the dashboard change), I have ‘categories’ listed on my sidebar 4 times (when it should be listed once). I’ve read and reread all the forums, help topics etc. that I can find and tried every suggestion, nothing is working. It’s frustrating beyond belief. SERIOUSLY considering migrating to a different blog. HELP!
Otherwise it is really great, but it has made “design” more difficult, because you cannot just drop those blocks in the right places like you used to.
Also at least yesterday you could not copy your old code – which made the thing ReallY difficult. Would it be possible to fix that?
Hi Mat, yep….what an improvement, thanks for resolving most of the small irritations, In my oppinion, WP is now in a category to advertise themselves as a Site and Blog builder system, and not just a blog. Congrats on the success, believe me their are millions out here that are excited as you are.
Lovely. Simply nice look and feel. Looks like you worked hard on it and it shows.
Good!!!
