Today we’re pretty excited to launch a new dashboard design to everyone here on WordPress.com.
If you have a few minutes, try clicking around and exploring the new layout and features. It’ll be unfamiliar at first, but like riding a bike you’ll find yourself picking up new habits and cruising down the road in no time.
Those of you who follow the wordpress.org side of things probably saw the sneak peak that included several screenshots, the screencast of the new gallery feature, and the exhaustive list of features from the 2.5 release announcement. Now those improvements are available to you, including a few cool bonuses like a blog switcher menu on top.
Here’s a brief rundown of the features that are relevant to WordPress.com users:
Cleaner, faster, less cluttered dashboard — we’ve worked hard to take your feedback about what’s most important in the dashboard and organize things to allow you to focus on what’s important — your blog — and get out of your way. In collaboration with Happy Cog and the community we’ve taken the first major step forward in the WordPress interface since WordPress.com was created.
Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, stats, people linking to you, and we’ll allow more customization here soon.

Multi-file upload with progress bar — before when you would upload a large file you’d wait forever, never knowing how far along it was. And uploading more than one photo was an exercise in patience, as you could only do one at a time. Now you can select a whole of folder images or music or videos at once and it’ll show you the progress of each upload.
Now you can put that 3gb of free space to good use!
Search posts and pages — search used to cover just posts, now it includes pages too, a great boon for those using WordPress.com as a CMS.
Tag management — you can now add, rename, delete, and do whatever else you like to tags from inside WordPress.
Concurrent editing protection — for those of you on multi-author blogs, have you ever opened a post while someone was already editing it, and your auto-saves kept overwriting each other, irrecoverably losing hours of work? I bet that added a few words to your vocabulary. Now if you open a post that someone else is editing, WordPress magically locks it and prevents you from saving until the other person is done. You’ll see a message like below.

Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.” We’re now using version 3.0 of TinyMCE, which means better compatibility with Safari, and we’ve paid particular attention this release to its integration and interaction with complex HTML. It also now has a “no-distractions” mode which is like Writeroom for your browser.
Built-in galleries — when you take advantage of multi-file upload to upload a bunch of photos, we have a new shortcode that lets you to easily embed galleries by just putting [ gallery] (without the space) in your post. It’ll display all your thumbnails and captions and each will link each to a page where people can comment on the individual photos. I’ve been using this feature on my blog and have already uploaded over 1,200 pictures into 23 galleries. The shortcode has some hidden options too, check out this documentation.
In light of the launch, we’re also going to be keeping support open this weekend so you can let us know of any issues that pop up as a result of the new design. This new dashboard being out also allows us to roll out some other improvements we’ve been holding off for a bit as they didn’t make sense before. Keep an eye on this blog next week.

|Matt i dont like it, it’s too confusing and i dont like the colour design.
I was a bit stunned yesterday when I went to catch up on my blogging on WordPress yesterday and found that they had completed a major overhaul of their program. At first I thought I had done something wrong (oh, no!) and then I realized what had happened.
What do y’all think of the changes?
What made you decide to choose either WordPress or eduBlog? In my case, it was (of course!) the fact that WordPress had the design template I preferred.
It took me a couple of hours (really) to figure out how to use the upload photos feature. Once I had that under my belt, though, it was smooth sailing.
I really, really like WordPress. I was having difficulty with the code until yesterday (compatibility problems with Safari). The update has fixed that problem nicely for me. I like how the write-up about the changes puts it: “Friendlier visual post editor — I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.”
I also like all those new widgets (gee – look at all those visitors to my blog – oh, they’re all me!). The Dashboard widgets are cool, too.
Anyway, I’m really enjoying this piece of social software-hope you are too!
Can you make a option where you can choose a color scheme for the dashboard?
I hate what you did to my dear dashboard. could you please change it back? or at least allow users the switch between designs. Ii do appreciate though the work you’re putting into making wordpress a better place. thank you! can I have my old dashboard back now please? 🙂
I will give it a try but 1) I don’t think it looks nice, and 2) I think things are not well prioritized (for example, I don’t care that much about how many posts I have, I care more about the latest comments I got) 😦
I absolutely love it! Tremendously cool.
Not nice, wish that we had control and not someone with a “bright idea” at WP.
I do not have spell check on my dashboard when writing a post. Has it moved? No longer a part of the program? I really do enjoy spell check!
Maybe I shouldn’t say anything until I’ve gotten used to it, but visually, I’m sorry to say that it looks like crap. Very many good improvements, but the usability and looks could definitely do with a good rundown. Apart from that, all’s great.
Sorry, but I hate it.
Why does the dashboard only occupy 1/3 of my screen? Who came up with a fix width format, this is NUTS.
Please give us the previous dashboard.
This is pretty uncool stuffing this down our throats without any options on our part.
I like some of the new features, but I HATE the new design.
Sure, it takes a short while to get used to, but after my first post, I love it. Great thanks!
Ummmmmm, in general. ClapSo doesn’t like change…
Oh, ok. It’s all just peachy, I’ll get used to it (as if I had a choice)…
Can I has more text wigitz?
The scientifically impossible I do right away
The spiritually miraculous takes a bit longer
Sorry…one more layer to the practical functionality. More clicks, less productivity, more time involved in editing and reading.
Well…Sol and I (we are two admins of this blog) were just writing a new post…when the dashboard changed. 😮 What a shock il was at first..! 😦 We thought we’d done something wrong… 😮
But now we are nearly riding a bike again… 🙂
Great work, thanks guys.. 🙂
Whatever happened to Spell Checker? Gone fishing? I hate having to write posts in Word…
I am new to wordpress, but love its easy feel.
I though am wondering if ever we will be able to post adds, have some form of Im and posssibly a way to a personal chatroom. Being new to blogging was wondering if those are even possible.
I find my images 🙂
So you can forget what i say earlier 🙂
thanks for just dropping this on us without warning 🙂
we’re still working away through some of this new fangled stuff
like the design.. the color code guides you along .. thats good… when adding widgets and you would like to remove one to maximize space… well you cant delete widgets
I’m not sure how to articulate this improvement except to say “it doesn’t mess with your code anymore.”
Yeah right. If people change the “alt” tag in images to the “title” tag you just change it back.
Where you guys drunk when you redesigned the dashboard? I mean I’m ok with the new features and stuff, but the layout is horrible. Thumbs down for this one.
Thanks for fixing the widget editing!
I like the new dashboard, had no problems with it, except I can’t find the spell-checker. Where, oh where, is the spell checker???
Everybody’s loving it and I’m hating it with a passion. I’m locked up scripts constantly. It took me a while to find out how to upload a *gif image, and beings that I’m on a laptop the pop-up window is bigger than my screen and I can’t close the window!
Bah… I don’t understand why you guys have just shoved this down our throats!
I don’t know what to do any more. I guess I should pull everything out and move to a new blog hosting site. I’m so frustrated with this!
FF
Where are my stored graphics? Where do I find the graphic files I’ve already uploaded? Why do I feel like a need a freaking Ph.D. for WordPress folks because they’ve ingeniously screwed up… oh wait… I feel a new “locked up script” coming on…
Thanks y’all!
…freaking unbelievable..
Working on a MAC and can’t upload pics or links anymore. Any tips?
Wow can some go to my website it will be awsome! because iam because new at this so. plz
Bike analogy was awesome.
I still feel that the other dashboard was more intuitive, and I still don’t know how to update my blogroll. Help?
Frankly speaking, this whole revamped dashboard is much better than the one before…the fonts looks smaller, leaving more space for other things to be added. Overall, I just love it! Keep up the good work guys…
Mostly a real improvement, but a couple of drawbacks for me, using a
text-only browser with limited javascript support (edbrowse). Some of
the widgets on the dashboard are not duplicated in clickable links
elsewhere. “privacy” is one. I’ll have to play with it a bit more to see
if I can live with it. I suppose I can always ask someone with sight
for assistance, but I would rather not have to if I can do it myself.
wow!!!!! this is a little wild! if there is a way to just change mine that would be great!!!!!!!!! I liked the other one a lot more!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I was also writing when the upgrade happened, but I’m getting used to the new features. I got my post and images posted properly yesterday without problems. But today, my blog is not formatted properly and the font is huge, especially in the sidebar section. What’s going on?
Please do respond, as others may come back and find this problem, and an answer here can save a lot of support time. If this is an individual problem, please correspond with me directly.
Thanks.
Unhappy at the moment. Lost Spellchecker, maybe.
cool, cool, cool!! you guys are unbelievable!
New fresh look, surprising me…
it’s cool..
Thanks for the changes. WordPress it is a great comunity.
Made my first post last night with the new photo upload tool and after I figured out why my inserted images were not defaulting to the actual image size (wtf) I then realized that selecting “middle” alignment was useless and had to do it again in the text editor.
Lastly, it took considerably longer waiting for this overlay interface to load instead just having the image interface RIGHT THERE in front of me. They way I work I write, then add images one at a time, as appropriate or warranted by the copy. So I’m uploading each image, one at a time. And waiting for this image interface to load, and then load again, and then load again, and then load again.
In the old interface, it was already there. No waiting. No loading.
Another added benefit of the old image embed interface is that, I can- at any time, jump back up and reset my cursor to the right place I want my image. With the new system, the text editing is blocked off from me while in the image tool. That, IMHO, is WORSE than the freewheeling, do whatever we want in either area whenever we want.
This is a definite step back.
Also, I didn’t see any “bulk upload” but maybe I missed it. If selcting one at a time in succession is “bulk” then that’s also no improvement.
I’d love to see drag and drop from my desktop into the copy that I’m working on… with some embed tool handling the FTP in the background.
Now THAT would be an improvement.
Oh, and a browse tool with a resizable window (like the text edit) and user-definable images on a page.
DING…. here’s an idea.
All those widescren monitors? Offer an alternate “write” page with the text and image tools _side_by_side_ with equal sizes for each. This way, those of us who aren’t working with 800×600 monitors can make use of this extra horizontal space. This 24″ widescreen monitor ought to be good for _something_ besides video editing.

I didn’t like it at first but I love the new interface now.
felt better last version 😦
The new look is fine. Took me a minute to navigate around. However, I do have one complaint. What happened to the spellcheck feature when creating/editing a new post? I NEED THAT!! 🙂
The orange is pretty hidious; who’s idea was that to be the default? I’ll try to change it right now in profile like you suggest. (I really just wanted to get my picture here.) lol
I was in the middle of writing my entry too when it changed over and then I thought aliens had made off with the website. About the only thing I don’t like is the bright red stripe on the main site page. It reminds me of some kind of error or something. I do like seeing what entry got the most hits (over 350 I think) and incoming links, although one is from a SPAM person. I guess I’ll get used to it. I like that it has so much info though. The graph with the number of hits has been a little funky this evening. Probably just some minor snafu. Thanks.
I have a busy schedule and normally use the “Post Time Stamp” so I can schedule and publish as my time permits. I am having a problem with it now, it doesn’t seem to want to work for me! 😦
Keren!
Makasih Matt !
Is there a way to delete the comments widget off of the dashboard? I didn’t see a way to do it.
I can’t seem to find the spell check option. Where did you hide it???
Kind of threw me for a loop at first, but since I’ve gotten a chance to look around I can sincerely say that I love it. A lot of the more cumbersome aspects of it seem to have been streamlined.
It’s clear you guys put a lot of thought into this, and shows that WordPress continues to be the leader in blogging software. Awesome!
Oh, but I noticed one thing missing: The word counter on posts as you type. If it’s there and I’m missing it, sorry. But if it’s not there, can it come back? I loved that.
I like it so far version 2.4 took me alittle while to get the hang of it ,but I have already seen more new features that I like.
I like it although I was abit lost initially.
Thanks!
Where is spell check in the new format?
so.. when can we upload audio and video files without needing to buy more spaces?!!!
thanx any way..
keep it up..
Thankyou for upgrade the dashboard, but previous menu i can cahange or add blog roll but now where the menu for add blog roll?
Thanks
Agust
the new design deserves a round of applause.
very user friendly.
These are my request:
1. bring post# back. i use post# to link my entries rather than the date, because i adjust the post date all the time. but the post# don’t get change, even after the date has been changed! so it is more effective to link through the post# rather than through the date!
2. bring back the capability to edit the comments. i add my response in the comments. i find that easier and more effective in keeping up with the flow of the discussion, rather than me, having to comment on my own post!
Hi
I have to say I am a bit shocked but I guess if the old one is gone forever then that is it.
I have a suggestion: could you please move the “delete” button AWAY from the “save” one?
Nothing happened to me but it is just that I don’t like to see it here. It seems too easy to make a mistake. With all the extra space we’ve now got Im sure you could find a less obvious place to put it. (Sorry Ive started to read the other comments but there were too many for me to read in a row so I dont know if somebody suggested that already (I just ran a search for the word delete on the page and this suggestions did not come up so…)). What do you think?
Thanks a lot in advance for taking this into consideration.
Absolutely hate it. It looks like you took a giant leap backwards in technology and went back to a really old version of the dashboard. Not impressed.
hi
problems with spacing and uploading photos to posts. never had this prop before.
thanks
Many thanks for the good work!
I like the new dashboard with wordpress blogs removed at the bottom of the page and stats displayed towards the top.
I miss the category list on the “new post” page. It was very handy near the composing box.
The file upload windows is rather slow and cumbersome even if it enables you to upload several files at one go. I also want to be able to upload various ODF files such as ODG since I’ve chosen WordPress.com because it uses some libre software, namely WP.
All these new features are fine on wordpress.com but they may make WP a bloated monster requiring expensive hosting plans and high-speed connexions.
Finally, I think you should avoid the black color here and there, the former navy blue was fine. As the main color used is blue it would be best to keep to the color and play with various hues.
cheers
Great stuff. Keep up the good work.
What’s missing though is a widget that would ping Digg, Marktd, Wikio, reddit and the likes automatically. At the moment, one is compelled to add the digg logo manually and this is very tiresome.
OMG.. great design..
luv this one..eye catching and more easier 🙂
I appreciate some new features of the WYSIWYG editor, like headings. However, I don’t think adding colour to text inside the editor is a good thing as good practice is to keep HTML and CSS stuff separate. Colour shouldn’t be inserted in the the HTML code.
I rather dislike the feature “import from Word” as proprietary software shouldn’t be encouraged while we have ODF, and the resulting HTML code may be garbled or invalid. Yes I know, most people don’t care but you should care 😉
cheers
Oh my, I hate it. I have tried so many things but can;t find the things I want to and need to. I have tried to upload images but then don’t show up in my post and can’t find my uploads HELP!!!!!!!!!
thanx u Sooooo much!!
Please go back! I am having difficulty posting now with the new applications. Java and all. Please give us the choice to convert or keep what we previously had!
i like the new look.
thanks for the update !
Some stuff to love. Some stuff to not love. Overall, I think I’ll come to like this better, though it seems odd to make the switch without having an option to use something more similar to the old dashboard. I noticed the spell check concerns were addressed above, so I’ll wait on that to materialize . . . the one other thing I noticed: What did you do with that lovely running tally of my total word count below the post window? That was one of the most helpful features, and it seems to be gone without a trace. 😦
Dear Mat,
Have sorted out some kinks, upgraded to flash 9, have changed the color to classic & have fiddled around with the media library functions………… Conclusion: Love the value added features! Kudos…am looking forward to the ride in a new bicycle …. Wheeeeee!!!!!
Love it. I was taken by surprise too. Thought WP had some hiccups on the CSS.
A little change on the categories when writing new post might help. Love the way I can just select the categories by the right hand side after finish writing. Maybe place the less commonly used windows at the bottom. But for categories, tag and password protected. Might want to shift back to the right hand side? 😀
About the dashboard. Was wondering if there’s a new feature that allow us to shift and place the windows to our own priority of reading. Since personally I love to view on the blog stats and recent comments first thing I log in. :p
Just alittle suggestions. Overall, loving it. No problem. Better performance xD
More colors please~~ I vote for Purple! =x
It’s actually more intuitive than I thought it’d be, but I can see someone newer to tech being overwhelmed… the only thing I’ve found so far worth noting as a possible danger area is the “Publish Post” button is half an inch from the “Delete Post” link.
Uploading photos easily does not work for me anymore. I have to either go via Fotoflickr, or copy the image url from the gallery window (and paste it into the normal insert image icon) and pray an hope that when I click save, the image will actually turn up in the post.
I don’t like it ’cause I can’t find pictures upload now. ewww!
ok new design – but something is wrong – top comment in the dashboard not the same as on the site – and – a thing more like that –
“Please do not use these comments for asking questions, support, or bug reporting” – I think this comment is like “bug reporting” but it is too about the changes…
learning and kind of liking the new dashboard, BUT i found a little thing that made me unhappy: the SAVE and keep editing option!
now there is only SAVE and automatically go to the post of page..
that is a bit bad!!
or maybe i just do not see that option!
I really like new desing. I think it’s very useful. 🙂
But, what about the word counter when you are writing a post? It’s missing… 😦
I’m not sure I like it. Have to get used to it, I guess. But – is it the new dashboard or is it the MistyLook-Theme? – I can’t reach the widgets. I switched from tarski to MistyLook and I have seven widgets in the sidebar. It says so in the dashboard (which is a fine feature!), but under Design – Widgets it says “You are using 0 widgets in the sidebar”… I can add a widget and delete it (after looking for the delete-button a while), but I can’t change the 7 widgets that are really there!
Arrrgh!
No wordcount or spellcheck any more?
Absolutely love it.
Thanks!
I like it! Thank you!
Hey, also, I just noticed while writing that the “word count” feature is gone. This is a huge bummer! As someone who suffers from a tendency to write far too much, I’ve long relied on the word count to tell me when I’ve run on too long. Please? Please can we get this back? And get rid of that horrific red bar? Thanks so much in advance.
I think I will eventually like it..but right now I am not happy with it. I can’t get any photos into my posts. I made a post and it disappeared..when I pushed publish.. ugh. HELP!
A refreshing change, but not an improvement.
The classic dashboard allowed much ‘dragging and dropping’ of options, and made skins with two sidebars very easy to manage. Now, these have to be edited in isolation.
The new dashboard seems very archaic, with very little ‘drag and drop’ and lots of Edit links to be clicked and confirmed before anything is achieved, and very little visual feedback.
Two steps forward, and three back might be a fair appraisal, and one hopes there will be a more modern version along soon.
hi,
as i don’t want to read all the hundreds of comments perhaps it was mentioned before, but would it be able that the users choose themself the 4 blogs that are shown at top of the dashboard?
ok, i’m having come troubles with the new back design…where do i have to explain the bugs i’ve found?
Reference: Theme: Three-Column Minimalist R 1.0 (edited CSS).
Before I was able to move (drag and drop) widgets from Sidebar 1 to Sidebar 2 or back, because I saw both sidebars at the same time. Now I can not do it anymore, because the dashboard shows only one sidebar per time. In case of text or HTML content inside one text widget the process is more complicated now, because I have to copy the content, delete the widget (in one sidebar), and than add the (same) widget and paste the content (in another sidebar).
Excellent !!! Clean and elegant
it’s much better organized!! good job guys!
It certainly gave you a lot of work, but at 65 I find the old dashboard easier. I miss the old Write page with easy overhead bar.Now I can neither alter the style of print or upload images from Google.
sorry: Theme: “Sandbox”, Three-Column Minimalist R 1.0 (edited CSS).
thank you, best wishes and good luck, !gor
