Inuit Types is one of the sharpest looking themes around and I’m excited to let you know that today it’s now available on WordPress.com. Let’s take a look at what it has to offer—including the alternate dark color scheme.

The image above highlights the optional featured posts (available from Appearance->Theme Settings) that take advantage of the new Post Thumbnail module available from your Edit Post page when using the Inuit Types theme.
Inuit Types features a clean drop-down menu with lots of room for multiple pages.

And now, a look at the front page intro widget area—a great place to add an extended introduction to your blog.

There’s a lot of really cool details in Inuit Types—things like full-width image attachment pages or the custom default avatar image for comments—but the thing I think you’ll be most excited about are the layout options and alternate color schemes available from Appearance->Theme Settings.
Here I’ve set up my Inuit Types demo blog with the included dark color scheme and full width featured posts. I’ve also chosen to display the sidebar on the left side of my content. Check it out.

Pretty cool, huh? And—besides looking great—the dark color scheme is one of the most readable I’ve ever seen; I love it. I’m pretty excited about Inuit Types. I hope you will be too.
Inuit Types is available in your WordPress.com dashboard and, for WordPress.org users, in the WordPress.org themes directory.
I have a question about this theme. Is there a way to make one of the pages on the top of the blog a “HOME” page or Front Page (like the one in CUTLINE, where if you click on front page it takes you to the main welcome page of te site?) Maybe I’m just doing something wrong, but I tried to edit the permalink on one of my parent pages so that it links to the main page of my blog, but it won’t let me do this. Thanks.
You might want to check out the Support instructions on changing your “front page” that are available here.
I also have another question. Is it possible to put a slideshow from RockYou or any other website in the text widget for the introduction page?
A lot of shortcodes (like video) won’t work if placed into text widgets, but we’ll keep this suggestion in mind.
I like Inuit Types’ dark color scheme…
The first theme with a child-page. Cool!!! I wish vigilance-theme had this feature.
This looks beautiful. I especially like the idea of changing colors.
Love the typographic elements so much, that I switched my photography blog, “Random Acts”, to Inuit Types. Believe me when I say this is a big deal because now I have to resize just *a few* images. 🙂
Love it!
Wow. This is simply amazing!
!!!
That’s all sorts of awesome!
Inuit Types is the best magazine-style theme .. I used it when I used wordpress.org.
It does look pretty cool, thanks!
Wow… Another new cool theme…
Does this have a custom header? I’m asking because I usually have some sort of image for my header.
Inuit Types doesn’t currently support a custom header. It does support using a featured image in the featured post, however.
Molto bello, complimenti!
Nice Theme, but wehre to setup the featured images for the posts? (At WordPress-Dashboard)
Featured images are set up in the Post Editor for each post. You should see a new control in the right-hand column of your Dashboard. Click on the link to begin setting featured images.
That’s awesome. 😀
I like it. 🙂
Lovely! So considerate of you to include the alternate dark color scheme.
Hi,
I love the theme, but I seem to be unable to see the previews of my pics. Help anyone?
Love the black color scheme, which really does bring out the text and mounts the images well. Very classy indeed! Keep those themes coming, and remember that we really does appreciate the efforts you and the team put into making more options for us as users.
My posts are only showing texts…without pictures…I need help!
Darn! Just what I was looking for…Happy Trails…
I think this one is a very nice and novel kind of theme from the WordPress guys. Nice job. Keep it up!
This is simple and sharp.
I like the theme. It’s simple and nice!
I would definitely use it if I could have FULL posts on the main page, not just extracts. Any way to achieve that?
Currently, no. The excerpted posts are part of the Inuit Types magazine index style.
Ooh, gorgeous. Love the drop down menus. But I have to add my voice to the sad chorus of if only it had a customisable header …
Make the fonts smaller, please!
Yes, it is really nice and distinct, especially concerning the ease and clarity of blog navigation.
what was the reasoning for the name of Inuit? Just wondering, looks good!
This is just a guess, but I think the theme name is supposed to hint at the cool and elegant typography.
Loving this new theme … but I cannot get any color scheme except for “1-default” to display.
If you are having trouble with the color schemes not changing and you have the Custom CSS upgrade, you might want to check and make sure you haven’t pasted the entire theme stylesheet in the Edit CSS area. If you have, you might have pasted the CSS for the default color scheme.
If you’re still running into trouble, please contact Support and we’ll be happy to take a look.
I really like this, thanks!
This looks really impressive. I’m going to try it out now!
Thanks, guys.
The images on my site don’t seem to be showing up in the “featured image” thing, and also in the general content area of the post – on the home page.
To get your images to show up as featured images, you’ll need to check in your Dashboard for a new control labeled “post thumbnail.” Each article needs to have a thumbnail set there in order for the image to appear properly.
Expect to see us use featured images more often in the future. 🙂
Awesome! I think I might try it!
It’s nice but I don’t see the connection in the design to the Inuit or their culture. Am I missing it? Or is the creator from Iqaluit or elsewhere in Nunavut perhaps? Or is there something else I’ve not noticed.
I love the Inuit tradition and am excited about Canada’s new Federal Territory in which they are the majority population.
It would be wrong to use the name without foundation.
I’m not sure if the theme creator is Inuit himself, or from the north, but I think the name was chosen for it’s suggestion of coolness.
Cool!
Where on the Dashboard is the ‘post thumbnail’ control? I seem to be having a hard time finding it – or is it not there yet?
I really like the idea of a featured image and can’t wait to get to use it!
You should see the Post Thumbnail control when editing a post. It will normally appear near the bottom of the left column (under your category controls and such).
If you don’t see it, please contact Support and we’ll be happy to help you out.
Agree with the group. Customizable Header would be a great add to this one. I know you can drop a banner image using that text field as a widget, but it doesn’t replace the blog title, which would be nice. Really like the theme and where WordPress.com appears to be headed with new themes. Nice work!
This theme is gorgeous, really. Great work.
BUT…
Be aware, before installing it, that it (apparently) WON’T show your full posts on the main page — only excerpts. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, but WordPress.com support confirmed, this theme will NOT show your full posts on its main page.
That’s worth knowing — it meant I couldn’t use the theme. So be aware.
If they ever change it so it will show full posts on the main page, I’ll be all over this beautiful, amazing theme.
I like the white on black, it gives a very very nice look.
Featured images are limited to those images you can access in the Media Library.
I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out how to get an image to show as a featured post on the home page. I edited the settings under Theme Settings, and put an image in the post. Am I missing something?
P. S. Excellent theme!
wow! that was great…looks good….all i can say is WOW!!!
like this theme….
What a really nice theme…I might use this one on my blog 🙂
I think I may have to give this one a try. Looks like a great theme for a photo blogger. 🙂
You can sticky a post to make it featured, however
quite impressive, thanks.
photoblog!
I’ve already used this theme, I love it but with some notes :
1. For longer text at the home page, I should write on the EXCERPT section (at post edit page) and it takes forever to write the excerpt for hundreds of my posts (though I can copy paste but it really takes forever).
2. The featured post only valid for last post, and no way you can put a text on it. It just a title (and image thumbnail if you prefer to).
3. The image thumbnail for featured post is really painful to use, I don’t know what a proper resolution for wide image and square one. My thumbnail get stretch and look ugly.
4.The image thumbnail ALSO displayed at single post page, whether this is good or bad is depend on you.
5. You can set a two column posts at the home page (first page) but it always switch to one column posts at the next page.
i think it is totally awesome..
How can I add a new header (jpg file)? Isit possible to add a grouped style preview? Looks a lot better then right-aligned…
Nevertheless… The theme I’ve been waiting for for such a long time.
Is there a way to use a banner rather than text as a header? I like the two-column way of displaying stories, but I need a banner.
Also, do you all envision integrating themes that let users choose which articles are featured rather than just defaulting to the most recent posts? That would work great for a newspaper blog where you don’t want to bury news but have other things to post.
Loooks good to me!
I was quite disappointed that the image use wasn’t more intuitive. If you select to use your photo (that’s within the post) as the thumbnail not only does it show up on the front page – which is where you want it, but it also shows up duplicated within the post but stretched out and looking terrible. No reason at all a thumbnail of the image should show up within the post itself, especially when the post already contains the properly constrained version of the image. This made the whole layout a “fail” for me.
Unlike others, I was happy with the post excerpts showing vs the entire post… gives a visitors a reason to keep clicking.
Fantastic, folks — this is my must-have theme.
I am, on the other hand, having a BEAR of a time figuring out the thumbnails and how to make them visible on the main page. Is there a faq?
What happens to my existing blog if I change my theme? Will all of my pages, posts and content stay intact?
Hurray! A great looking theme that is utilizing nested pages and so many other wonderful features. Thank you! This is a great theme! Hope to see more that use the various sub-level page feature in the future.
Wow – this is a great looking theme. Love that the post thumbnail module has been incorporated.
I like this one. I might try it on.
any live demo? i want to see how it looks like…
my “featured post” didn’t show it’s image, what should i do?
is this [all featured] theme only for paid-user only?
beautiful, and my new selection–BUT:
–black and white contrast is a little harsh. NEEDS a white and 50% gray option or just a straight up “white” sidebar like sandra lee has requested above. this would be nearly perfect!
–i still don’t like serif fonts on blogs. needs a sans serif option more along the vibe of good old “hemingway”
thanks for adding the new theme. the author “bizzartic” clearly knows what they’re doing.
So what do the Inuit people think of using their name?
Good work, good team!
I love this theme! I spotted it some time ago at wordpress.org, so it felt like Christmas to see it here too. I’m using it already, but there’s one small bug. Picture description in gallery shows black on black (I’m using the black version). http://austenettegallery.wordpress.com/gallery/dancing/balls_dancing_wallpaper_1024x768/
The link there is visible in white, but not the text before it.I hope it can be fixed.
Either way, thank you for the theme!
BTW I thought that perhaps the new Theme Team might produce some elegant, separate trackbacks for old themes. I’m using Treba on one of my blogs, and I like it very much, but comments mixed with trackbacks create a huge mess.
I also like it
Sweet. I may have just found my new blog theme.
Rocks give origin to this mother planet, green is pulsating life, waves are the rhymes of continuity, flow is transcendental such a nice slimly in One!
Using it now on my blog. I like it. Just awesome! And since I configured the thumbnails features, the blog looks just AWESOME!
Great work folks. What else is in the piping?
Decent theme – dropdown menus should rule on WordPress. Now I await a theme with aesthetic dropdown menus AND custom header together. Faced with the pace of emergence of new themes after establishing a theme team I believe this is to happen soon!
Cool, clean, elegant.
Speechlessly beautiful. That’s it!
I really like the featured post bit, and I always think more images look good 🙂 Ty!
great looking theme
Tobi-Dawne: “If you select to use your photo (that’s within the post) as the thumbnail not only does it show up on the front page – which is where you want it, but it also shows up duplicated within the post but stretched out and looking terrible.”
You can turn the option off in your theme settings.
A very nice theme, indeed! I love the drop-down menu!
But I don’t like that the posts are not shown in their fully, that you have to click on a post to be able to read the whole post. Can I change this somehow?
You can modify what is shown for the posts by giving them an excerpt on the post edit page. You can also use a static front page and it will show the entire page.
I love the black! It makes things look so sharp and clean. Thank you guys!
Really like this. Black does have a pretty special presence, and you have to KNOW that anybody with a sharp looking blog like this must be worth reading!!!
Very cool. I like how you can switch between white and black. Suitable for many dif kinds of blogs
I adore two columns themes. Even if they don’t match with my blog subjects.
I did it. I switched to Inuit. So far I like it… 😉
So cool… I like the dark style….
Could someone highlight to me as to why this theme is actually so “amazing”, “great”, “fantastic”, bla? It’s OK I think, but it doesn’t knock me out of my socks. The text widget is a good idea, for example if you wanted to cite a famous quote every day. Maybe I’m missing something or I’m irritated by the mass of inane groupthink adoration comments with zero information value. Brrrr!
Personally I’m still using Contempt without the blue header background – I think it is – because all of the themes are purely “non-European” in style, if there is such a thing. I have a private sandbox blog where I try out new themes. I usually hit the wall with details like that the header image can’t be centered or the colors and so on. I’ve considered getting a CSS upgrade, however, being able to avoid spending time fidgeting with the technical aspects of the blog as a non-technical person, is exactly why I chose WP in the first place.
I’ll stick with Contempt for now:-)
Very nice theme, good work 🙂
If black and white view, not good enough
but if black everything OK
I have not really figure out the ” new Post Thumbnail module “. Where do i find it? I do not see it anywhere.
great! i’m using it and it is really flexible…love it ❤
Before I go through the process of reformatting my blog so I can use this theme properly, can anyone tell me if it’s possible to decide which column a post will appear in or if there are any themes that allow you to do that? Such a feature is critical to the direction I want my blog to go in.
You cannot decide which column a post will appear in. The order is determined by the date of the posts.
That currently isn’t an option with Inuit Types but it’s certainly something to think about with this or another theme.
Wow this is even better, neat and clean!
Good work theme guys!
That’s cool. I like it. 🙂
Soon I have to try this theme. Thanks.
I’m a serious ThemeShaper fan. Keep rockin’ the great work!
this theme is really great looking… but why on earth couldn’t it be simpler like:
big picture or video showing on the 1st page with text underneath?
and with the FULL text available, not only exerpts… that would be great (and it would make my life simpler 🙂 )
Thanks, Ryan!
