2-Factor Authorization Loop (No Back-up Codes/Number Invalid)
-
I’m locked out of my WordPress Acct and am stuck in a 2-factor authorization loop.
The phone number on file is no longer in service, so I’m not receiving the 2-factor text messages. And I can’t find my backup codes.
The 24/7 AI chat told me to fill out the account recovery form. I did and provided my last transaction ID from April ’26. When I hit “Submit” the webpage updated (without submitting the form) and a box appeared that told me to use the password recovery link to obtain an email. I did.
I was able to update my password via the link, but I ran into the 2-factor authorization again. Therefore, I’m still locked out of my account.
I think I need a human to help me update my number on my account so I can receive texts for 2-factor. Any help?

Hi @bfglenn86,
I can see why this has been confusing. In situations like this, the only way to bypass the two-step authentication prompt yourself is by using a backup code to log in. Once logged in, you can disable two-step authentication and then set it up again with your new phone number.
You can find the full instructions here: https://wordpress.com/support/security/two-step-authentication/#if-you-lose-your-device
Since you no longer have access to the phone number on file and don’t have your backup codes available, the next step is to work with our Accounts team through the account recovery process.
I checked on this for you and can confirm that we have received your account recovery request successfully.
At this point, please allow a little time for the review process. We appreciate your patience while the Accounts team verifies the information you submitted. If they need any additional details to confirm account ownership, they will contact you directly. If the information already provided is sufficient, they will reach out with instructions to help you regain access to your account and assist with updating your two-step authentication settings.
Thanks for your patience while the review is completed!
