500 error when trying to sign in to wp-admin

I can’t get into wp-admin. I tried one suggested solution — going into phpMyAdmin through my hosting provider and finding the active_plugins row in wp_options table and changing option_value to a:0:{} . That didn’t work. To be honest, I’m not very savvy about this and am just following directions by rote rather than knowing what I’m doing, so I’m getting nervous about trying any of the other suggestions online (e.g., repairing corrupt .htaccess file — I can’t even find this file or any folder/directory (?) called public_html, where it’s apparently supposed to be. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

OK, thanks, macmanx. I use a different web host, so I’ll try to get help through them.
