A problem with my website's security certificate – urgent help needed!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

when i type my website’s url (https://www.womenmeanbusinessuk.com) into the address bar of internet explorer i receive the following message:

“There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website’s address. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any date you send to the server.
We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website.

click here to continue to this website (not recommended)”

This is alarming as I do not wish to lose my customers! I do have the same url ending in .co.uk pointing to my blog, but cannot think why this would be an issue? I also thought I’d completed a google verification of my primary domain… Please help me urgently!

    thanks, Sue

    Hi Sue,

This issue pops up because the URL you’re using begins with https:// instead of http:// (without the “s”). You should use this URL for your site instead: http://womenmeanbusiness.org.uk/

When you connect to your WordPress.com dashboard over an HTTPS connection, we use an SSL certificate to encrypt your connection. However, we don’t support HTTPS connections for blogs with mapped domains like yours. SSL certificates need to be signed to a specific domain, and we can’t provide certificates for every mapped domain, so our certificate is signed for WordPress.com.

When you connect to your domain via HTTPS but your security software sees a certificate signed to http://wordpress.com/ it’s alerting you that WordPress.com may be intercepting your connection. That’s actually fine, since your site is hosted by WordPress.com, but your browser doesn’t know that — so it sends that alert.

You can learn more about HTTPS (and how to turn off the alert in your browser) here: HTTPS

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Thank you so much for that fast response! What a relief. Happiness to you: Happiness Engineer!
Just to clarify: because I’m logged in to WordPress, when I type my blog address into my address bar I get the security notice for your security certificate. But, when my customers type in http://www.womenmeanbusinessuk.com, they should not receive this error message?

Yep! Whenever anyone types in the address starting with http:// they won’t receive that warning message. It only pops up when you start the address with https:// instead. (And you can disable that warning in your browser if it bothers you.)

Just let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
