Access blocking.

Can one get locked out of one’s WordPress editing window? For example: Too many attempts with wrong password/username. If ‘Yes’, how do you clear this condition?

    Thank you.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

That sounds like it’s something that could happen with self-hosted WordPress.

To check, can you tell me the link you’re using to login to please?

    Many thanks!

One of the links is: http://websitename.com/wp-admin with “website” being a placeholder for the site’s real name.

…Of course there’s more to this story so feel free to back away quickly….

My simple question relates to whether my repeated attempts to access the back end of a WordPress site have triggered a lockout specific to me that manifests itself as failures when trying to log in. “Bad Passwords” “Unknown Usernames” etc are some of the errors messages I’ve been getting.

    That’s it.

The rest of the story is interesting but also a train wreck. My little WordPress site – https://ciascoursemaps.wordpress.com/ – works just fine. I created it for a very simple purpose, to be easily changed frequently and not require much attention. My password and username access works fine.

The WordPress site I’m having problems with is owned by a friend. This friend is running a small event business in which her website is the primary source of interaction with her clients. She posts notices of the events and specific details and event results. She also has to post event maps for each weekend’s event. The maps change each week and are customized to the event – but they are distributed as simple PDFs.

My friend’s graphics skills are really basic and she’s asked me to handle the prepping and posting of each weekend’s maps. She’s a good friend so what the heck. She gave me her password and username (I know, not smart, but her tech skills are really low as well and she trusts her friends) and everything’s been working fine. It takes me about 15 minutes a week, it’s simple and I’m helping a friend. We all need to earn a little good karma when we can.

Two weekends ago, this approach stopped working. I couldn’t log in. Input the user name, input the password ….. there’s a pause and then the password box starts vibrating and the password is rejected. Assuming my fat fingers are the problem, I try again. Fail. Again and again.

I contact my friend …. and through her get put in touch with her web designer and a separate e-commerce consultant who’s also working on the site. It turns out they all have administrative access to the site but each does it a bit differently. They all claim their access still works and is really simple. They give me passwords and user names but none of them work for me. My friend prefers to outsource this work to her two consultants and doesn’t actually know how to access her own site.

At the moment, I’ve backed away from doing this favor for a friend and suggested that perhaps the problem is that there are too many people independently changing the site and they’re actually – though unintentionally – working against each other and I’m caught in the middle.

So my simple problem might be due to a much bigger management issue related to this website or I may have triggered a lockout due to my repeated efforts to access the site. I’m trying to figure out if the problem is the latter issue and I’m responsible.

    Thank you.

  • It appears that your friend’s website is not hosted here on WordPress.com. So, to get further help, you have to post in the WordPress.org support forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

WordPress.com and the WordPress software are two different things, and you can read more about their differences here:

It appears that the problem was at my friend’s end. One of her web people created a new identity/password combo for me in their system for me and the problems have disappeared.

    Many Thanks for your help.
