Adding a purchased domain name to a free WordPress account plan?

Hi, I’m helping someone set up a site with you and she’s bought a custom domain name from WordPress, but is still effectively using a free account for the content/pages. She doesn’t want to take up a ‘hosting plan’ to keep costs down, but I can’t seem to find any way of adding the custom domain in this way without doing so. Was it a ‘mistake’ and is there any way of rectifying this, as I’ve noticed you get a domain name included when you take up a plan anyway? Her custom domain name, when typed into a browser address bar comes up with the default alphanumeric name after loading, and it works, but it would be nice to apply the name properly. As I say, she’s already bought this without a plan so is this possible? Would welcome any instructions if it is on how to do this. Many thanks, Dan.

  • You do need a paid plan, any paid plan, to set the custom domain as the primary address: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address

All paid plans do include 1 free year of domain registration, so if you purchase a paid plan now, I can send over a refund for what was paid for the domain (as long as it’s within the 96-hour refund window on domains).
