Adding a TXT record for subdomain
-
I’m trying to add a site to Google Search. They asked to add a TXT record for the site. When I login to the registrar it says the domain is managed by WordPress NS. When I login to WordPress it says I need to add the TXT record at the registrar. I can switch DNS to be managed back at the registrar but how do I point traffic back to the subdomain.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @lewiray
Thank you for reaching out.
I understand you’re trying to verify your site with Google Search by adding a TXT record, but you’re receiving conflicting information about where the DNS is managed.
I checked the DNS for your site and found that shelley.houseoflewis.us is a subdomain. DNS records for this subdomain are managed through the DNS zone of the parent domain, houseoflewis.us.
I also checked the parent domain and found that it’s currently using these nameservers:
- ns23.domaincontrol.com
- ns24.domaincontrol.com
These are GoDaddy nameservers, which indicates that the DNS for houseoflewis.us is currently managed through GoDaddy, not WordPress.com.
Because of that, you’ll need to add the Google verification TXT record in the DNS settings for houseoflewis.us at GoDaddy. Once the TXT record is added there, it will also apply to the
shelley.houseoflewis.ussubdomain if Google has instructed you to add it to the parent domain. If Google specifically instructed you to create a TXT record for the shelley subdomain, you can also do that in the DNS zone for houseoflewis.us by creating a TXT record with the appropriate host name (for example,
shelley, if that’s what Google’s instructions specify). If you’re unsure where Google expects the record to be added, feel free to send us the verification instructions or the TXT record they provided, and we’ll be happy to point you to the correct location.

Regarding your question about pointing traffic back to the subdomain, if you decide to manage the DNS there, you’ll need to make sure the following A records exist for the shelley subdomain:
Type: A
Host: shelley
Value: 192.0.78.24Type: A
Host: shelley
Value: 192.0.78.25These records point shelley.houseoflewis.us to your WordPress.com site, so as long as they’re in place, the subdomain will continue working correctly.

Thanks for your reply. I had already transferred the DNS back to the registrar at that point. Then I just created a CNAME to point back to WP for shelley.houseoflewis.com. I knew there were multiple ways to accomplish what I was trying to do. Thanks again for the reply. Your answer would have worked too.
I don’t work with DNS and the registrars enough anymore for the best answer to just jump into my head. Have a wonderful 2026.
Cheers!
